The Casting Couch: November 8, 2006

Terminator TV show gets its lead

Three quick casting stories this morning and we begin with probably the most interesting of the trio, yet it isn’t movie casting, only movie related as Lena Heady has found herself cast in the lead role in the Fox pilot “The Sarah Connor Chronicles,” a pilot based on the Terminator movie franchise. The storyline will focus on Sarah, a role made famous by Linda Hamilton, and her son John as they fight attackers from the future in present-day Los Angeles. Josh Friedman will write and David Nutter is set to direct the “Sarah Connor” pilot. [Variety]

The rumors surrounding a remake of the 1939 classic The Women continue to swirl. One constant has been the directorial choice of Diane English, but originally a cast was rumored to include Uma Thurman, Annette Bening, Meg Ryan, Sandra Bullock and Ashley Judd. Now, Meg Ryan is the only one left of the original group but she has been joined by a few new names including Lisa Kudrow, Anne Hathaway and Candice Bergan. The original pic starred Norma Shearer and Joan Crawford and centered around an all female cast of gossiping ladies dealing with friendship, divorce and betrayal. [Production Weekly]

Finally, Christian Slater (who was acting crazy on Monday Night Football this week) and Elle Fanning are set to star in the feature film adaptation of Karen Kingsbury’s novel “Gideon’s Gift.” The pic centers on Big Earl Gibson (Slater) who, one long-ago Christmas, lost the two things most precious to him-his wife and daughter. Angry and heartbroken, he abandoned his belief in God and is now living on the street. Gideon Mercer (Fanning) is an eight-year-old leukemia patient determined to reach out to this lonely and hurting man. And Earl is just as determined to rebuff her. It is only through a miracle that Earl finally comes to understand the true meaning of Christmas. And it’s only then that he can return the favor with a precious gift of his own. Filming is set to begin February 2007 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. [Production Weekly]
