Box-Office Wrap-Up: May. 9 - May. 11, 2008

Speed Racer was a speed bump? That's genius in headline writing!

I don't want a medal or anything - the writing was on the wall. The buzz on Iron Man was still rock solid while folks looked at the two other contenders (What Happens in Vegas, Speed Racer) and said thought "why would I see that?" Let's break this thing down!
#1 movie predicted correctly: 3 Weeks In A Row
I was a little bullish... only because I'd told everyone I know to see it. As it turns out I know around a million less people than I thought.
Result: 50.0 million (My rank: #1, $7.3m off)
Even though my prediction was high I still had one of the lowest numbers on the web for Speed Racer. For that I salute myself.
Result: 20.2 million (My rank: #2, $5.9m off)
B-Luv said it best - people who saw this clearly hate themselves. So we've got a little over two million people in the states who want for only pain. Poor people, we should pity them.
Result: 20.0 million (My rank: #3, $3.9m off)
Oh we're rolling on this Oracle. Next week is easy too, Narnia should have enough steam to knock of Iron Man. Speed Racer turned out to be a speed bump. Heeeyooo!
Result: 7.6 million (My rank: #4, $0.6m off)
Am I five for five? Sure. But anyone could do that if they had my level of expertise and feel for crowd behavior. Man, if I go ten for ten I'll probably explode my head will get so big.
Result: 5.7 million (My rank: #5, $0.7m off)
Only a 37% drop for this one as word of mouth is clearly helping it. How do you get solid word of mouth? It's simple - you make a good movie. The rest takes care of itself.
Result: 3.7 million (My rank: #7, $.7m off)
I had Redbelt making a splash. This turned out to be highly incorrect. Kumar slipped nearly 50% (and that slip was off basically no dollars) but still had enough for 7th.
Result: 3.1 million (My rank: #8, $.6m off)
It dropped quite a bit but not as much as I thought. I must have jacked up the theater count or something, because it's hard to be off by this much on a film that has a clear pattern set. I'll check the spreadsheet and get back to ya.
Result: 1.9 million (My rank: #10, $.9m off)
Back on track! See what I'm saying though? With these little ones I'm usually only a few hundred thousand off.
Result: 1.3 million (My rank: #9, $0.2m off)
Wow. No one wanted to see this! Sorry Mamet, your tenth failure in a row is in the books.
Result: 1.1 million (My rank: #6, $3.5m off)
