Box-Office Wrap-Up: Jul. 25 – Jul. 27, 2008
Dark Knight won almost as big as X-Files lost!
Of course Dark Knight won. That wasn't even an issue. But there are more interesting stories out there to talk about. Let's do that… NOW.
#1 movie predicted correctly: 2 Weeks In A Row
I was a little low, but nothing to get upset about. I won't toot any horns this week – but it's nice to see Dark Knizzle pass $300 million in a mere ten days.
Result: 75.6 million (My rank: #1, $2.8m off)
I misjudged it, plain and simple. This is a comedy that most people "get" and so it's accessible to a large audience. Only three million people or so saw it though, so let's not get too excited.
Result: 30.0 million (My rank: #2, $5.3m off)
3. Mamma Mia!
Wow. Good for them. This is a very campy film, but campy films have fans too. A 35% drop means plenty of people saw it again and word of mouth must have been strong. It's made $135m on a budget of $60m so it's party central around Universal.
Result: 17.8 million (My rank: #4, $5.4m off)
Probably the worst result of the year given the prior fanbase. The budget was only $30 million, so they still might be okay, but somewhere along the line they dropped $10 – $20m that they could have made with better marketing decisions. Hmm, maybe Meet Dave was a worse result now that I ponder it.
Result: 10.2 million (My rank: #3, $9.8m off)
It was a strong weekend overall at the box office. The two new releases didn't really allow for much atrophy given they weren't in any existing demographics. That's my fancy way of saying Hollywood finally scheduled well this weekend.
Result: 9.4 million (My rank: #5, $2.8m off)
6. Hancock
This will hit $400 million worldwide. But the real money will hinge on the super duper holiday DVD edition. Count on it.
Result: 8.2 million (My rank: #6, $2.3m off)
7. WALL-E
I had Hellboy 2 in this slot but that film was punished again this weekend.
Result: 6.3 million (My rank: #8, $1.9m off)
It annoys me that in a few years everyone will agree this wasn't that good. It's like people are so excited to see anything that real judgment is delayed.
Result: 4.9 million (My rank: #7, $.6m off)
10. Wanted
This is #37 all-time on the Rated R revenue list and rising fast. I'm perusing the list and I see Jerry Maguire was rated R. That blows my mind. I remember that one being family friendly, no? Anyway, Wanted will never ever catch the top spot – held by Mel's Jesus movie ($370m).
Result: 2.7 million (My rank: #10, $0.8m off)
