Box-Office Wrap-Up: Jul. 18 – Jul. 20, 2008

Dark Knight set records, Hellboy 2 sank like a stone.

Yeah, it was an impressive weekend for Dark Knight. However, I'm more interested in the utter collapse of Hellboy 2. Why? Because I knew Dark Knight was going to own the weekend – but I only hoped it would thump that other lackluster film too. Now all my dreams are coming true! Huzzah!
#1 movie predicted correctly: 1 Week In A Row
Three day record. Solid. Dig it. I think it will be near $160 million when everything is said and done but for now I'm happy with this number.
Result: 155.3 million (My rank: #1, $3.2m off)
Ow. I'd really hoped there weren't enough suckers out there for this one. Perhaps this was Dark Knight overflow? I don't know. If there are people out there that saw this instead of Dark Knight I really fear for their eternal soul.
Result: 27.6 million (My rank: #2, $6.6m off)
It definitely dipped. They are going to need to hustle to make a dollar on DVD as they only had one winning weekend.
Result: 14.0 million (My rank: #3, $2.7m off)
As I was only a million off I was fine with this prediction. The real problem was…
Result: 11.9 million (My rank: #5, $1.0m off)
Wow. What can you say? A 71% drop at the box-office is unheard of. It's as if it wasn't a good film and a few vocal people out there were propping it up, only to have it crushed by a superior product. So then, for the last time, don't come at me with Hellboy 2 talk anymore. It's been measured… and found wanting.
Result: 10.0 million (My rank: #4, $5.5m off)
B-Luv knows in his heart now that this won't be getting an Oscar nom. But Dark Knight might. Don't laugh!
Result: 9.8 million (My rank: #6, $1m off)
Oh, it's very nice when you can peg an opening weekend this well. I highly suggest it. Luckily we'll never hear about this movie again.
Result: 7.3 million (My rank: #7, $1.1m off)
It's made a bankload internationally. So they got that going for them. We should see this sequel around 2010 unless McAvoy wins an Oscar in the interim. Oh wait, even then he'll be under contact, right?
Result: 5.0 million (My rank: #8, $1.1m off)
Another lovely prediction. I may ask for a raise.
Result: 4.0 million (My rank: #9, $0.1m off)
I took Meet Dave here?? What was I thinking? That's horrible. Meet Dave fell 69% which doomed it. I should have called that. Ugh. Anyway, at least I did okay with the Batman. Here's a little bonus pick for you too: It's gonna win next weekend.
Result: 1.7 million (My rank: Not Ranked)

Focus on the damn movies. Weve heard enough of your pompous self tooting your own prediction horn. Get over yourself.

You haven't heard NEARLY enough of my pompous self tooting if this is your first comment on the site. So to you I say, it is you who should be getting over your OWN self first, friendo.

So there.
