Box-Office Wrap-Up: Aug. 15 – Aug. 17, 2008
Tropic Thunder won but didn't exactly dominate...
My inclination is to say it was a very slow box office weekend – but then I look and see last weekend was even slower. Perhaps I'm just disappointed in Tropic Thunder's lack of domination.
#1 movie predicted correctly: 1 Week In A Row
The good news: It won the weekend. But I think Phelps and the Olympics hurt. I look for this one to stay strong come next weekend. Mostly because it's the funniest movie out there.
Result: 26.0 million (My rank: #1, $7.1m off)
Whoa. What are you doing here? I'm impressed that this finished higher than that Clone War mess even though it's been out a month. That means some people are still smart out there.
Result: 16.7 million (My rank: #3, $.9m off)
When they showed us this footage at Comic-Con my only thought was "mmm, okay." It was just kind of there. Lackluster. Pointless. Then the film came out and the reviews said the same thing. Luckily only two million people bought tickets. We demand quality!
Result: 15.5 million (My rank: #2, $5.2m off)
4. Mirrors
I'm happy with this projection. I do think if they had screened it a few more million could have been had. But let's face it: Horror is dead.
Result: 11.1 million (My rank: #4, $0.4m off)
I'm sure they are happy taking in ten million with Tropic Thunder on the board. Brad already mentioned the low budget here means this is a big box office winner. Sequel anyone?
Result: 10.0 million (My rank: #5, $0.5m off)
Everyone I've spoken to has mentioned how bad Bello was in this. In fact, the only person who has seen it that hasn't mentioned how bad she was is her agent. He knows it was bad, but he'll never say it.
Result: 8.6 million (My rank: #6, $0.8m off)
7. Mamma Mia!
A person told me yesterday they loved this one. It's all love/hate here. You either enjoy cheesy camp or you don't.
Result: 6.4 million (My rank: #8, $1.5m off)
This is looking like a slight loser. $27m budget and it's made $32m so far. They better get that unrated DVD fired up.
Result: 5.9 million (My rank: #7, $.8m off)
It sits at $91m. That means it could hit $100m domestically. But I hope it doesn't, if only because I don't want the apocalypse to start too early.
Result: 5.0 million (My rank: #9, $0.3m off)
Now that is a lovely pick. This actually finished second in per theater average – perhaps they'll give it a few more next weekend.
Result: 3.7 million (My rank: #10, $0.2m off)
