Box-Office Oracle: May. 9 – May. 11, 2008
Iron Man will win by a bunch... and Speed Racer will finish second by a bunch.
#1 movie predicted correctly: 2 Weeks in a Row
1. Iron Man
Guess what? It's going to win again. By a ton. The only competition is Speed Racer – a film that is such a tweener it hurts. That plus all the free advertising Iron Man has gotten this week via word of mouth mean only a 42% drop. You heard it here first.
Estimate: $57.3 million
2. Speed Racer
Still, this should make some dollars. A PG rating is nothing to scoff at and it's nice counter-programming to superheroes and lousy rom-coms. This will scrape some family dollars together.
Estimate: $26.1 million
It has 600 more theaters than Made of Honor opened with which is unfortunate given how terrible it is. They are trying to get all the monies they can opening weekend because it will dry up come week two.
Estimate: $16.1 million
As terrible as this was it was nothing compared to the sheer awfulness of Vegas. That movie deserves an award for maximizing awfulness.
Estimate: $7.0 million
5. Baby Mama
Bottom feeder time! I have some good news though: I see Narnia and Journey to the Center of the Earth next week. Hmmm, I suppose that's only good news for me. Sorry 'bout that.
Estimate: $6.4 million
6. Redbelt
It's getting 1300 theaters all of a sudden. That's got to help, right?
Estimate: $4.6 million
By now you've seen it and realize that B-Luv is not to be trusted where comedy is concerned. The man just doesn't laugh at other people. He likes his own jokes, yes, but not those presented by Apatow on the big screen. Hey, I'm just as confused as you are.
Estimate: $3.0 million
It's made $27m so far. My only solace is the fact that it has to be considered a financial disappointment, right? At least until the unrated DVD comes out.
Estimate: $2.5 million
9. Nim's Island
It loses another 900 theaters this weekend which doesn't help matters. Hard to make money when people can't even buy a ticket on accident.
Estimate: $1.1 million
Does anyone remember that album called "Tragic Kingdom" from No Doubt? This was before Stefani became all solo-artisty. Back when men were men and wombats were wombats. I miss those days. See you Sunday.
Estimate: $1.0 million
