Box-Office Oracle: Aug. 8 – Aug. 10, 2008

The Oracle chooses Pineapple - but it's gonna be close.

#1 movie predicted correctly: 0 Weeks in a Row
B-Luv thinks Dark Knight will take it again. He might be right. The Wednesday opening will bleed a bit of the box office but I think the positive word of mouth will help even more.
Estimate: $26.1 million
Dark Knight has stayed very healthy on the math front. A 43% drop last weekend was tremendous. I'm only thinking a 40% drop this weekend too – another great performance. But I'm taking Pineapple because I believe The Olympics hurts a film that's been out a month more than it hurts a stoner comedy.
Estimate: $24.0 million
I probably can't drop this one enough but it's already looking like a very sad box office weekend. So 53.5% is the drop-off here, and heaven help those poor bastards that wander in unawares.
Estimate: $19.0 million
They made the second one because all of the actresses starting gaining big mo after the first one was released. Plus the budget is like 85 cents. But this will never crossover into mainstream entertainment. Unless they go R rated with the third one of course.
Estimate: $14.7 million
You can't stop it. You can't contain it. You can only hope to survive through the plight upon our world that Mamma Mia! is.
Estimate: $9.2 million
The people have spoken: They love trash! The good news is they'll like Pineapple better than this. And then Thunder better than both. Then the world will be restored to its natural axis.
Estimate: $8.9 million
Why don't we journey to the center? Sure, it's hot, I get that – but it's right there. Underneath us. Get the scientists working on the tube technology!
Estimate: $3.4 million
SPOILER: They don't tell you how he votes. What kind of trash is that? Make a choice screenwriters of the world, be bold and daring. Otherwise you end up with vanilla extract.
Estimate: $3.2 million
Perhaps they should have released it in 3 dizzle. That would have helped.
Estimate: $2.4 million
Hancock will cash out after hitting $400 million worldwide. That's not too shabby for a story that never really went anywhere, is it? How's about a sequel fellas? I'll give you another shot.
Estimate: $2.1 million

You stole my thunder and already wrote that I think Dark Knight will take the top spot, but I would like to add that I think the R-rating will also help. Pineapple (even though I gave it a C+) is definitely worthy of the #1 spot and wouldn't be a bad film for Dark Knight to lose to.

However, can you believe the total dollars on Hancock? That movie got savaged by reviewers and as Laremy points out it will hit $400 million worldwide, but it is already at $217 million domestically. Really impressive and proves Will Smith is our biggest movie star at the moment. With Seven Pounds coming out this Fall it will be Oscar talk for the man once again.

You can only hope to survive through the plight upon our world that Mamma Mia! is. Ouch. I mean, damn dude, seriously. I can't believe I actually read that. That grammar made my eyes hurt. "… plight upon our world that IS Mamma Mia!" or "… plight upon our world that Mamma Mia! has become." I have NEVER said anything about someone's grammar before, but this is a pretty good website and shit like that makes it look amateurish. Proof-read, proof-read, proof-read.

Good feedback Malevolentmuse! I appreciate it and will try and do better (more well) with my columns in the near future.

No, wait.

Language is a living thing, meant to convey emotion. You DID understand the sentiment of the beast – so your petty critique of grammar is most likely your own insecurity bubbling up to the surface. It happens, and I've been there. But please learn the difference between the AP style manual and engaging seat-of-your-pants musings. Because they are not one and the same.
