Box-Office Wrap-Up: Nov. 28 – Nov. 30, 2008

Four Christmases pulls a slight upset...

Upset! The tween hit Twilight was even more frontloaded than we thought. A 62% drop means that all those people seeing it four times opening weekend finally got tired.
#1 movie predicted correctly: 0 Weeks In A Row
Nice win for Vince Vaughn and Reese Witherspoon. I thought this would do a little less than Fred Claus but at $9500 per theater it crushed that one. As it turns out having a decent premise (as opposed to a terrible one) helps.
Result: 31.6 million (My rank: #2, $13.4m off)
2. Bolt
Obviously this was a much stronger weekend than I projected. Bad economy? What bad economy?
Result: 26.5 million (My rank: #3, $12.1m off)
Amazingly, Bolt actually made more money than it did opening weekend while Twilight fell huge. But I suppose that just tells us that parents needed something for the smaller kids to do this weekend.
Result: 26.3 million (My rank: #1, $4.4m off)
In the last edition of Oracle someone mentioned they didn't like this film. Really? What's not to like? Sure, it didn't have much plot, but it's not like you go in expecting an amazing story. Having solid fight scenes was enough for me.
Result: 19.5 million (My rank: #4, $7.1m off)
Still, it did better than I thought it would. Look for it to plummet next weekend as word gets out.
Result: 14.8 million (My rank: #5, $2.9m off)
Nothing like having a movie double the projection. This one stands at $217m worldwide on a budget of $150m. So they've still got a ton of work to do given the studio / theater split.
Result: 14.5 million (My rank: #7, $7.0m off)
It fully deserved this beating. Shame on you Transporter 3, shame on you.
Result: 12.3 million (My rank: #6, $1.3m off)
At $58m on a budget of $28m they should be set. I do sort of wonder what they spent the money on though. Is Paul Rudd clocking dollars these days?
Result: 5.2 million (My rank: #8, $1.1m off)
In my defense, around 200,000 Americans saw this one this weekend. I can't keep track of 1/1500th of the country.
Result: 1.6 million (My rank: Not Ranked)
10. Milk
A sweltering $38k per theater! Yowsers. This bodes well for the overall box office hopes, perhaps they can crack $50m with this little message film that could.
Result: 1.3 million (My rank: Not Ranked)

Madagascar has yet to open in the majority of foreign markets (where the original thrived), so DreamWorks should be set with that one. Bond is also set, but I worry about it underperforming in the states. If Bond can't make back its budget in the US alone, it might be the final nail in the "outdated" coffin (which I disagree with, but I've heard plenty of whisperings about).
Excellent news for Milk, and also for The Boy In The Striped Pajamas (which I saw this weekend and would highly recommend). The BO was much stronger overall that I thought, with everything being about 60% more than I predicted on Boxofficemojo

I'm confused. Some sources are claiming that Four Christmases actually made more than 46 million and that Twilight managed 39+ and is at second place with Bolt coming in third with a cool 31 million plus. Which ones are the right estimations?

@Vik: Yeah, you are looking at five-day weekend totals. We always predict and report on three-day.

Bolt actually improved into its second weekend of wide release? I thought it might, but what's the precedent on that one?

I must confess that I'm a wee bit satisfied to see at least one of my predictions for Twilight pan out (drop of over 60% in its second weekend). It's a bit of a relief to see massively overblown hype finally subside, like the last five minutes of an episode of House where they figure out that the underlying problem that almost killed the guy is something easily treated and he magically gets all better. (You can guess what I spent the weekend doing.)

Milk needs to open wider. I'd love to see it without having to drive an hour.
