Box-Office Wrap-Up: Feb. 6 – Feb. 8, 2009
He's Just Not That Into You dominates, Coraline exceeds expectations, Pink Panther and Push die.
On Friday night He's Just Not That Into You made $10m. On Saturday it made $11m. The projections only have it making $5m today, I'm a little skeptical there. I still think $29m is doable, but let's break it down for all the fans out there.
#1 movie predicted correctly: 2 Weeks In A Row
No production budget has been released but my guess is the topline talent took lesser salaries to do something fun. The only real money they spent was on the locations; each of the relationship strands takes place in what looks to be a million dollar condo.
Result: 27.4 million (My rank: #1, $5.9m off)
2. Taken
It only dropped 17%? That's stunning. The word of mouth here must have been outstanding. It sits at $122m worldwide, so Fox is already off to a solid 2009.
Result: 20.3 million (My rank: #2, $7.4m off)
3. Coraline
A very impressive number for a stop motion / 3-D film. Perhaps the creepy PG kiddie film has a future. It will also be interesting to see if it holds up, stop motion folks are early adopters, but will the average Joe follow?
Result: 16.3 million (My rank: #5, $6.5m off)
If the above three were the big winners of the weekend then this was the biggest loser. Dropping 40% from your first film is no way to sustain a franchise, fellas.
Result: 12.0 million (My rank: #2, $11.5m off)
Blart is at $97m on a budget of $26m, and that's before any international dollars. I may hate it, but these guys are banking.
Result: 11.0 million (My rank: #6, $2.4m off)
6. Push
Thankfully Summit still has all those Twilight dollars in the bank… because this one is a loss.
Result: 10.2 million (My rank: #3, $3.7m off)
7. Gran Torino
It was the best box office February weekend since Ghost Rider in 2007. I guess that's a sad commentary on February overall.
Result: 7.42 million (My rank: #10, $3.1m off)
Slumdog is at $118m on a budget of $15m, and that's before the Best Picture win helps them bank on DVD. If you're Danny Boyle you have your choice of scripts right now.
Result: 7.40 million (My rank: #7, $2.1m off)
I hope the budget here was nothing, because it certainly made nothing.
Result: 6.4 million (My rank: #8, $1.6m off)
10. Hotel for Dogs
It cracked the top 1000 of all time this weekend. Hopefully they had a pizza party or something to celebrate.
Result: 5.8 million (My rank: #9, $1.1m off)
