Box-Office Wrap-Up: Feb. 27 – Mar. 1, 2009Madea repeats as the latest boy band tanks.Wow. Madea repeats, even after dropping 60% from last weekend. The road is as clear as it possibly could be for Watchmen, it is cupcake city at the box-office right now.
#1 movie predicted correctly: 0 Weeks In A Row
I pretty much had this dialed in, the problem was the other film. We'll get to Jonas in a second. The story with Tyler Perry's Madea Goes to Jail is the $65m it's made on a budget that had to be under $20m. This means Tyler Perry will have an easy time finding financing for his next project. When you always make money it gets easier to convince banks.
Result: 16.5 million (My rank: #2, $.9m off)
I'm extremely heartened by this result. It's got to be considered a failure, and at the very least it places the rabid Jonas Brothers fans at under 1.5 million people. It ended up making less than a quarter of the Miley movie (per theater). Good. Let's write these guys off.
Result: 12.7 million (My rank: #1, $26.1m off)
It had a little better bounce than I expected. It now stands at $189m on a $15m budget. Still, for all of the studios thinking they can replicate this – you need Danny Boyle. Without a fantastic filmmaker you'd just be throwing the $15m away.
Result: 12.1 million (My rank: #3, $2.2m off)
4. Taken
Oddly enough this is being released on Region 2 DVD this Tuesday. It's one of the rare English language films that North America is behind on.
Result: 9.9 million (My rank: #5, $2.6m off)
I just scrolled down the list to find Street Fighter. Yikes. Totally brutalized. He's Just Not That Into You has cleared $110m worldwide, not terrible. $20m of that has come from Australia and The U.K. Clearly they have ladies looking around for answers too.
Result: 5.8 million (My rank: #7, $1.4m off)
The top twelve made $87m, the worst weekend since December 21st. I bring this up only because there isn't much left to say about Paul Blart: Mall Fool.
Result: 5.6 million (My rank: #8, $1.3m off)
7. Coraline
Commenter Steve alertly pointed out that Coraline left 3-D screens this week, so much less dollars available. Speaking of commenters, the Watchmen guesses ranged from $50m to $95m. So my $88.5m is definitely optimistic. Trevor's $95.3m is positively peachy while Vince's $50m is the bearish take.
Result: 5.2 million (My rank: #4, $3.0m off)
I predicted it to fail. But it REALLY failed. As in "no more Street Fighter movies please" level fail. Ouch. The sad fact is only one out of every 600 Americans bought a ticket to this. Which means you have a waaaay better chance of knowing someone in jail than knowing someone who bought a ticket here. Hey, I've got a great idea: Show this in prison!
Result: 4.6 million (My rank: #6, $2.2m off)
Boom. Back on track. No, only kidding, I realize that Jonas losing means I was off this week. I'll make it up to you next weekend, promise.
Result: 4.4 million (My rank: #9, $0.7m off)
10. Fired Up!
Friday the 13th is only $95k behind the initial projection for tenth place. So I may end up whiffing here too.
Result: 3.8 million (My rank: #10, $1.1m off)
