Box-Office Wrap-Up: Feb. 20 – Feb. 22, 2009

Tyler Perry continues to have the financial blueprint.

I'm not one to doubt estimates… but I'm sort of doubting Madea makes $9.8m today. My guess is they end up much closer to $40m. Still, a hell of a weekend for T-Per.
#1 movie predicted correctly: 4 Weeks In A Row
It was the biggest Tyler Perry opening ever, and it beat the second place film by $30m. That's impressive. It also looks poised to become the biggest Tyler Perry film ever, it only needs $22m more to pass Madea's Family Reunion.
Result: 41.1 million (My rank: #1, $16.1m off)
BoxOfficeMojo has it as the number #2 kidnapping film of all time, behind only Ransom. What about Raising Arizona fellas? It would be 13th on their list if they counted it. I guess kidnapping comedies don't rate.
Result: 11.4 million (My rank: #2, $2.7m off)
It sits at $56m worldwide, not enough for me to think it's banking just yet.
Result: 11.0 million (My rank: #, $m off)
Back on track! Though this one was crushed with a 56% drop. I guess they are figuring Oscar fans are right in this demo.
Result: 8.5 million (My rank: #4, $4m off)
Ahh, I see, people are heading out to see it before The Academy Awards. Makes sense, you want to have a rooting interest.
Result: 8.0 million (My rank: #9, $2.7m off)
Is an 80.7% drop the most ever? Of movies that made more than $4m on their opening weekend, yes. Star Trek: Nemesis back in 2002 is really the only recent movie that looks anything like it, that one went from $18.5m to $4.4m. Here's what I'm getting at; this was one hell of a drop.
Result: 7.8 million (My rank: #2, $9.9m off)
I feel great about nailing #7, #8, and #10. Audiences punished this one this weekend… for being a bad movie.
Result: 7.01 million (My rank: #7, $1.09m off)
It will pass $100m over its budget in the next few days. So talks of Paul Blart: Zookeeper are a financial reality.
Result: 7.00 million (My rank: #8, $1.5m off)
No one wanted to see it, even though it was a healthy 32% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Result: 6.0 million (My rank: #6, $2.4m off)
Budget was $50m. It's made $20m so far. Can you say tax write-off? I think you can.
Result: 4.5 million (My rank: #10, $.4m off)

Next weekend you like Jonas Brothers? Or Street Fighter? Man, it hurt just to type that.

There's a list on boxofficemojo for the greatest 2nd weekend drops of all time (which I'm sure you, Laremy, have already seen). "Friday the 13th" comes 6th on the list, behind the likes of "Undiscovered," "Slow Burn, "Gigli," "Bad Moon," and "Return to the Blue Lagoon."

Man, Coraline is doing pretty well but it is the budget that is acting as the bad guy. I hope it makes a decent profit. On the other hand, yay for Taken and Slumdog and also at He's Not That Into You's drop. That should NOT be allowed to make $100 million!
