Box-Office Oracle: Jul. 3 – Jul. 5, 2009

Gotta like Ice Age at the top. Gotta!

#1 movie predicted correctly: 1 Week in a Row
It's difficult to find much recent precedent for animation over the 4th of July. I know that Wednesday and Thursday will hurt it a little bit — but I still have it going big.
Estimate: $55.9 million
Heavily frontloaded. The baseline bleed for Wednesday openings that pivot to a holiday weekend is about 57%. I've put this on a 61% bleed. Even if you're one of the people who likes it, you've got to admit that hasn't been the uniform response. This weekend the folks who hate this one will see some proof they're not alone.
Estimate: $42.5 million
I liked it, but there are definitely reasons to be worried about its box-office prospects. It's a bit slow. it's a bit long. And it's not a sequel or a remake, which makes marketing it tougher. I hope people see it. But I don't see a huge number here.
Estimate: $23.2 million
The Hangover will challenge it for fourth. That may be the only real drama of the weekend – unless you've got Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen making a serious charge.
Estimate: $11.3 million
Does anyone have an R Rated film that can top The Hangover's eventual $250m worldwide cume for 2009? Inglourious Basterds and Bruno are my prime candidates, but I wouldn't call either of them a sure thing.
Estimate: $10.1 million
Seriously, who saw this? I know one of you out there couldn't resist. Fess up, and tell the group what we missed.
Estimate: $6.8 million
7. Up
Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs will take a huge chunk out of its flank this weekend. But who has waited this long to see Up? You really should've seen Up already. Oracle mandate.
Estimate: $4.5 million
Angels & Demons and Terminator: Salvation were both released after Star Trek. And both are already out of the top ten. Respect.
Estimate: $2.4 million
But I know we're all anxiously awaiting the unrated cut.
Estimate: $2.0 million
Clearly this won't match the box-office power of last weekend. But if my numbers hold it will finish third for the year, not too shabby.
Estimate: $1.5 million

Any severe disagreements? Am I too high or low on Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs or Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen? Are my fears for Public Enemies misplaced? Here's your chance to work me like a speedbag, flex your predictive might.

@jeremy wein: Funny People is a good call. I thought it might be rated PG-13 but you're right. On the other hand, Sandler's more serious work tends to falter.

I think your predictions for Ice Age 3 are too high, and for Transformers and Up too low.

With a poor 14 million opening day, it's gonna be hard for Scrat and company to make over 50 million during the weekend. I think it will make 47.5 million friday to sunday and a 70 million in the 5 day period.

As for Transformers, ok, it's goin to suffer a huge drop, but not over 60%. The weekdays are showing us that it is not collapsing very quickly. It should make 16 million friday, 18 million saturday and 14 million sunday for a 48 million second weekend, and a 297 million cume in 12 days.

And you really think Up is going to fall 65%, from 13 to 4.5 million? That's just waaaaaaaay exagerated. It's not going to make less that 7 million this weekend, and with this I'm starting to believe that it finally won't reach the triple century mark by the end of it's run.

1. ICE AGE 3 – $55.1M
2. TRANSFORMERS 2 – $45.8M. Dropped it 58%. Dunno what to do with it. Could drop anywhere from 48% (the first movie's drop) to 65%.
3. PUBLIC ENEMIES – $27.6M
4. THE PROPOSAL – $12.7M. No competition this week. A 32% drop I think is about right.
5. THE HANGOVER – $11.9M. This week it still has power, so even with the loss of 455 theaters, I think it still won't lose more than 30%. But next week, Bruno will steal most of its audience.
6. UP – $7.0M. As much as we all don't want it to, Ice Age will crush it. Plain and simple. I just hope it won't lose more than 47%.
7. MY SISTER'S KEEPER – $7.0M. A typical 44% drop.
8. YEAR ONE – $2.4M. This year's Love Guru. And deservedly so.
9/10/11 STAR TREK/PELHAM 123/NatM2. $2.3M for everyone.

I think you got UP and PELHAM way too low. Even with Ice Age arriving in full force, no way Up loses 66%. And Pelham was at $5.5M last weekend, you seriously think it's gonna lose 70% just because of Public Enemies and the loss of 1,100 theaters?

As for the others, I pretty much agree.

1. ICE AGE 3 – $50M. Though this may be too big. After all the 4th is on Saturday, and the last time that happened, an expected big movie didn't open as big as expected (That was Armageddon). I see it doing decent enough business, but it could be as low as $45M, or even $40M. Just depends on how bad the Saturday numbers are.
2. TRANSFORMERS 2 – $45M. This seems a logical drop as it really isn't holding too strong. It's starting to show some chinks in the armor. It will still make just over $400M, but won't have the legs that the original film did.
3. PUBLIC ENEMIES – $25M. Decent opening, but now I'm doubting that it will make over $100M. I love how Christian Bale is no longer in the advertising campaign. I hope Terminator didn't hurt his career too much.
4. THE HANGOVER – $11.5M. I love that this movie will make $250M. This is a great comedy that balances out some brilliant moments with some lowbrow insane moments. This is what I want to see from an R rated comedy.
5. THE PROPOSAL – $11.3M. Glad to see Ryan Reynolds won't have to resort to a Waiting… 3.
6. MY SISTER'S KEEPER – $7.8M. This movie may not lose too much business. The $12M open surprised me.
7. UP – $6.7M. This will take a huge hit. The loss of 3-D theaters isn't something that Pixar has ever seen, but it does create huge drops in the fourth or fifth weekend. See Monsters Vs. Aliens as the best example.
8/9/10. Could go to Year One, Star Trek, or Pelham 1,2,3.

Ice Age: 52.2m
Transformers: 48.0m
Public Enemies: 26.9m
The Proposal: 11.5m
The Hangover: 11.2m
My Sister's Keeper: 7.2m
Up: 7m

Both of the openers should expand over the next few days and Transformers will make a solid fight with Ice Age over the #1 slot, with the kid factor and 3D edging out a victory. The robots will have a mediocre hold, and due to the nature of the film I think Public Enemies is going to somewhat disappoint.

UP will be fine. MvA plummeted 78% when UP opened by taking away it's 3D screens, but even more so, it was it's 11th weekend already and was pretty much running on fumes. UP has better buzz and word of mouth, and that should be strong enough to carry it through for several more weeks. Besides, UP is losing most of the 3D screens, but not ALL. Up held up well on IA3's opening Wed.

1.IA3: 60mil
2.TF2: 47mil
3.PE: 31mil
4.Proposal: 12mil
5.Hangover: 11.3mil
6.UP: 7.4mil
7.Sisters Keeper: 6.4mil

1.Ice Age 3= 54.5mil
No back to back for you Revenge of the Fallen.

2.TF2= 48.5mil
Wiill become no.1 grosser for the year on Fri (hope Avatar takes it down). It's frontloaded from the fanboy opening weekend push, and there's just way too much competition in the marketplace to keep this from falling under 50%.

3.Public Enemies= 29mil
Could hit the 30mil mark becauses of Johnny Depp's cache with women

4.The Proposal= 11.7mil
Will finish north of 100mil. Could lose some women to Public Enemies thanks to Johnny Depp

5.Hangover=10.6mil
Will cross 200mil this weekend. should have enough to end around 235-240mil, and possibly knock on the door of 250mil.

6.UP= 7.8mil
Looking at the Wed nos., it actually had a solid hold despite IA3 (41% off from last Wed). Like what was already said, it loses most-not all-3D venues but it still keeps a relatively fair share 3D venues nationwide. It will still have enough wind in it's sails thanks to stellar buzz to carry it through the coming weeks.

7.Sisters Keeper= 7mil

8.Star Trek=2.5mil
9.Year One= 1.5mil
10.Pelham123=1.4mil

1.) Ice Age3 – $62.0 mil
Its seems a good movie…. I dont think it will get less than $60m mark

2.) Transformers- ROTF – $ 48.0 mil
You are tight about its fall Laremy… But still… there are people who will see it again.

3.) Public Enemies – $ 26.5 mil
Yes it might be slow, yes it might be long and yes it is not a sequel or a remake… Still… It has Johnny Depp with Christian Bale… Thats got to count for something.

4.) The Hangover – $12.5 mil
Can this one stay in the Top 10 even more than Star Trek??… Well… Who knows?

5.) The Proposal – $ 10.5 mil
I think this one has made enough to be termed a SUCCESS!!.. right?

The AP is reporting that Transformers and Ice Age have tied–in studio estimates–with 42.5 million each. I think the fanboys will hear this and rush off tho the movies on today…
