Box-Office Oracle: Apr. 3 – Apr. 5, 2009

Fast and the Furious is going to win. But can it crack $40m?

#1 movie predicted correctly: 1 Week in a Row
It should win, it's more a question of dollars at this point. Do you put it at Tokyo Drift's $8k per theater? Or do you like the original's $15k per theater? I've decided to lean a little towards the original and say $12,500 per. Hey, they've got the original parts, right?
Estimate: $38.1 million
It will do well. No competition and great word of mouth. So let's dip it 46.5% and move right on.
Estimate: $31.7 million
It will pass $35 million domestically this weekend, and we all know the budget had to be pretty skimpy. So this is probably a moderate win for Lionsgate. Or as they call it, a "huge job-saving victory."
Estimate: $10.5 million
One of the things that bothers me about my life right now is the fact I haven't seen Knowing. I guess I have a pretty good life.
Estimate: $9.4 million
Right now I have this film losing by $2,800 to Knowing. That's not much, but it's what the Oracle-O-Matic 5000 spit out… so I have to go with it.
Estimate: $9.4 million
I'm a little more bullish on this title than most. But heck, the Dow Jones is nearing 8k, spring is about to be sprung, and I'm seeing State of Play on Monday. Why not predict a little love for my girl K-Stew?
Estimate: $7.5 million
Brad was saying he heard Julia gets $35m per film these days. That's an outrageous number. No wonder so many people want to act for a living! I, on the other hand, can attest to the fact that writers make squat.
Estimate: $4.3 million
It's getting almost 500 theaters this weekend so it only needs to hit $7,500 per to nail $3.6m. That would make it the third best on per theater average though. Hmm, perhaps this is a bit lofty.
Estimate: $3.6 million
I just listened to a podcast with the director of this film, seems like a funny guy. I've decided to pull for him.
Estimate: $2.6 million
I'll be the first to admit that no one cares about this movie. But the 11th spot is Taken at under $2m and Watchmen is hemorrhaging theaters. So 12 Rounds is getting this slot almost by default.
Estimate: $2.5 million

What's your take? Will Fast and Furious crack $40m? I was low on Monsters vs. Aliens, perhaps I need to loosen up the reins?

Monster vs Aliens wins this weekend. Way too high on F&F.

And have you noticed all the Adventureland ads now are all about K-Stew when she was hardly in them before?

I more or less agree with you on the "Fast & Furious" call. I think that it'll perform either like "The Mummy" from last year or like "10,000 BC" (like almost exactly- Tomatometer and all!).

So the ceiling for the film is $90-100 million at best. I think that there hasn't been a good action movie for a while since "Taken" (12 rounds does not count) and that the fans of the franchise truly like these characters and the films (devoted followers!), so they'll show up in spades…since we have nothing else better to do this weekend.

But I can see the film flopping, and if any film should flop this month, it'll most likely be "Fast and Furious". Or "Dragonball", I can't decide which.

I'm gonna risk big on "Fast & Furious" and not only let it zoom by $40 million, but near as high as almost $50 million. Let's hope I'm right.

1. FAST & FURIOUS – $47.8 million
Of all the idiot movies… in all the idiot movie villages… these ones stand alone. There is a massive audience for these "Fast & Furious" flicks (that audience simply being young teenage/tweenage boys and dopey college students that LOOOVVVEEE exploding/flipping/racing cars and hot women. Also:Vin Diesel) and they will definitely rush out to see it with their reluctant girlfriends intact on opening night (which will be it's biggest money day). Will it stand the test of time? Very unlikely, since the dopey college-student audience will flock over to Seth Rogen's "Observe and Report" NEXT Friday. Ultimately though, this weekend I'm sure it'll do very nicely, and yet another will be greenlit. You know how these things go… I can already picture the Variety box-office wrap up headline "Who knew after 8 years, audiences still loved racing cars THIS much??!?".

2. MONSTERS VS. ALIENS – $35.2 million
I really enjoyed this one, and it's getting incredible, incredible word-of-mouth (thanks to the beautiful 3-D-ness of it all) and it's the ONLY good thing to take your kids to these days (and next weekend too, since only the girls will be taken to see Hannah Montana after school in the minivan). Expect it to hold up supremely well. Seriously.. it's the only thing out there for all audiences.

3. ADVENTURELAND – $8.8 million
Hey now, it's actually been getting solid promotion. It also has that chick from "Twilight" (i actually wonder if she got fans from that movie, or if those 'fans' will follow her for "Twilight" only), but it also has those truly funny people that college students will recognize (Bill Hader, Kristin Wiig.. love those two a lot). But I feel that "from the director of Superbad" tag might be the main selling point here actually.

4. I LOVE YOU, MAN – $8.5 million
I'm gonna stay hopeful and pray that the word of mouth has finally completely spread to everyone by now, and they check this wonderful little film out instead of Knowing or Haunting in Connecticut, both of which are still getting rotten word-of-mouth (?). This is the only solid, high-concept comedy out there too (until next week, but in my opinion, that one doesn't look nearly as good or friendly), so I'm sure it could finally get it's leg up.

5. KNOWING or HAUNTING IN CONNECTICUT – $8.2 million
Yeah, these last three spots.. it's gonna be quite a close race.

As for me… I won't be seeing anything this weekend (have already seen the only good ones out there… Monsters Vs. Aliens, I Love You, Man), and probably won't be going to the movies until May, unless one of my friends wants to go see one of those two that I've seen.

Final thought though.. AM I THE ONLY ONE HERE WHO THINKS KRISTEN STEWART LOOKS LIKE AN ANGRY LITTLE BOY?

Have an awesome weekend, everyone! =]

I think "12 Rounds" is going to drop more than that. In fact, I think "Taken" may appear in the Top 10 for the last time this weekend.
