Bond Goes Blu and Here's the Review

Six James Bond titles get the Blu-ray treatment. Are they worth buying?

Live and Let Die (1973)
Enter Roger Moore and his first outing as James Bond. Live and Let Die is the first of his two titles to be released in this initial Blu wave and as it turns out I am not a very big fan of either release. My favorite Moore Bond is The Man with the Golden Gun and I don't really mind The Spy Who Loved Me, but the voodoo angle in this one, the tarot cards and the false face act is just stupid. This one also has one of the worst effects in the finale as Mr. Big is literally blown-up. Dumb.
For Your Eyes Only (1981)
For Your Eyes Only is not as bad as Live and Let Die, but it isn't great by any stretch. The one thing it really has going for it is a fantastic title song by Sheena Easton. This flick also utilizes a bunch of underwater scenes, but they are far better executed than in Thunderball. And as silly as the opening is, when Bond drops Blofeld (presumably) down the smokestack at the beginning of the film it is actually the very first image of Bond I remember from my childhood so it has a special little place in my memory based on that alone.
Die Another Day (2002)
Not great, but showed a lot of promise early on.

The beginning of Die Another Day and the film's entire premise is fantastic. It's the execution that turns it into a stinker, not to mention Halle Berry's lack of acting ability (mildly made up by her strong talent in the looks department) and the decision to cast Madonna as a fencing instructor, a scene that leads to a sword fight of all things. DUMB!

The kung fu chick battle aboard the plane at the end is fun to watch, but ridiculous and the whole facial reconstructive make-me-into-a-white-man aspect is beyond stupid. However, I like the diamonds embedded into Zao's face and the rogue Bond aspect. It's a give and take with this film. It wouldn't be the first Bond I'd watch if given a choice, but it certainly wouldn't be the last.
