UPDATE: Beverly Hills Cop 4 Off? Eddie Murphy Retiring?

Losing that Oscar really rattled him it seems...

Eddie Murphy

UPDATE: LatinoReview just posted an article referring to Beverly Hills Cop 4 with a quote from Ratner referencing the idea that the film may be rated PG based on earlier quotes. To that Brett replied, “Dont believe everything you read on the internet. Believe me, this is going to be a hard core ‘R’ Beverly Hills Cop. I start shooting next year”

Of course the film could still be made without Eddie. The boys at LatinoReview led me to believe Eddie was still on board. Who knows, the original article follows…

I can’t help but believe that all the Oscar buzz that was ultimately squashed after Eddie Murphy was pounded by critics for Norbit has a lot to do with the fact that Extra is now reporting that Eddie Murphy may be heading to the retirement home… at least as far as films go.

“I have close to fifty movies and it’s like, why am I in the movies?” he said, adding, “I’ve done that part now. I’ll go back to the stage and do standup.”

I am sure most of you wonder what this means for the recently announced Beverly Hills Cop 4, well apparently he told the Hollywood rag the film was in the works, he didn’t want to do it, because “the movie wasn’t ready to be done.” He was even willing to admit that he didn’t exactly go into work on Cop 3 with the most artistic of intentions, “They said this is how much we’re going to pay you. I said, ‘let’s go shoot it! I don’t care if the script ain’t right.”

This doesn’t mean that Cop 4 is completely off. After all, Brett Ratner is still said to be directing the film and I wouldn’t be surprised if Paramount tried to replace the actor and potentially skew younger. This is, of course, just me speculating but it seems to make some kind of sense.

Murphy still has Meet Dave opening on July 11 as well as Nowhereland in 2009 and Shrek Goes Fourth in 2010 in the pipeline.
