Bello, Breslin and Jackson Set for 'Rape: A Love Story'

Oh look, another Sam Jackson movie... and this one's about rape! Yay!

I would say I like Samuel L. Jackson as much as the next person, but outside of his performance in Black Snake Moan I have a hard time separating most of his performances over the past ten years. Sure, Unbreakable is in there, but outside of that it seems once the '90s ended Samuel L. Jackson just started phoning it in. No longer is it interesting to hear his name attached to a project as much as it just seems like yet another movie with Sam Jackson in it will be coming out. Today Variety tells us he has joined Maria Bello and Abigail Breslin in Rape: A Love Story based on the Joyce Carol Oates novella published in 2003. My reaction to this is… Okay, and I move on.

The story centers on a mother (Bello) recovering from a brutal gang rape who is stalked by the perpetrators but is protected by a sympathetic cop (Jackson). Breslin will play the woman's 12-year-old daughter, who witnesses the attack. John Mankiewicz ("House") penned the screenplay and Harold Becker (Sea of Love) will direct.

Does this interest you at all? Does Sam Jackson still instill hope of a good film in your mind?

He did a voice in it. Can't remember if it stands out from his other performances.

It allso doesn't help that for a long time it seemed that every movie that came out Sam was in it. And he allways gets the role of the shouter.

He can do other types of character but can't remember the last few that actually were different.

Shaft is decent (who else would fit that role). Changing Lanes is good, but there's Ben Affleck. How about Cleaner?

Come on guys, Snakes on a Plane was funny.

Plus, Maria Bello makes me interested.

But I agree with you, Brad. Sam's work in Black Snake Moan is the best thing he's done since Unbreakable.

@rattler76: Oh, I know he did a voice in it, but does that film actually stand out to anyone as a classic Sam Jackson film? And if so what does that say?

Whoa, regardless of Sam's work over the last while, doesn't the movie's premise strike you all on its own? Rape-a love story? No thanks….
BTW-loved the voice work in The Incredibles, and his work with Spacey in The Negotiator(?).

@df hampshire: The Negotiator is great, but that was 98, still 11 years ago.

@df hampshire: You mean about his voice work in The Incredibles? Sure, it was okay, but it isn't something I would point out and say it proves he is still at the top of his game.

As for the premise of the film… yeah, not exactly something I would write down as a story I am dying to hear, but the pieces may come together. Hard to judge on such a small amount of information, but I fully expect the title to be changed.
