Bale Talks ‘Terminator’ as Helena Bonham Carter Joins the Cast

Quick word from John Connor and more on a new cast member

Yesterday was the press junket for The Dark Knight and as a swarm of journalists occupied 10 different rooms at the Beverly Wilshire we sent the cast and crew in a tailspin as I am sure they heard the same question continuously rephrased over and over again. One such question would be to bring up Christian Bale’s role in Terminator Salvation. Bale plays John Connor and when asked how he and the filmmakers planned on approaching the fourth film in the Terminator franchise he said, “In a similar fashion to what Chris [Nolan] did with Batman Begins, in the reinvention. With Terminator - clearly it’s not an origin story - as with Batman Begins we were saying this is the first story, we’re ignoring the others.”

He continued, “Terminator, no, you have to recognize the mythology that’s already there. But, it’s our responsibility as the filmmakers and there is no point in making it if we’re not going to evolve it, revitalize it and reinvent it. It needs that, it has to happen, otherwise it won’t be successful from a creative point of view.”

As we were getting this bit of news from Bale, The Hollywood Reporter now tells us Helena Bonham Carter has joined the cast in an unnamed role described as small but pivotal.

Carter joins Bale, Sam Worthington, Anton Yelchin, Moon Bloodgood, Common and Bryce Dallas Howard. Filming is underway and Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins is set to hit theaters May 22, 2009.
