Christian Bale, star of the recently released Machinist and the upcoming WB flick Batman Begins has signed on for Harsh Times, a drama written and to be directed by David Ayer in his directorial debut.

The film is a dark urban comedy of a Marine who comes home from Iraq to start a marriage and civilian life but quickly becomes entangled with an old friend from South Central whose layabout ways have begun to catch up with him.

Co-starring in the movie are Freddy Rodriguez and Eva Longoria ("Desperate Housewives") with production beginning in Los Angeles and Mexico at the end of January.
