‘Bad Lieutenant’ Remake Cast is a Mixed Bag of ‘Huh?’

These casting choices just seem way off...

Val Kilmer

First we had Nicolas Cage in a Werner Herzog movie remaking the 1992 film Bad Lieutenant. Then Eva Mendes joined the cast to remind us just how bad Ghost Rider was. I guess it is only appropriate that we add Val Kilmer and Xzibit to the cast to make it entirely confusing.

The 1992 original pic starred Harvey Keitel as a corrupt cop investigating a nun’s rape, a role now occupied by Cage with Kilmer playing his partner. Xzibit is playing a nemesis named Big Fade. No word on what role Mendes is taking on, but my guess is that it will involve her kissing someone and likely getting into a dangerous situation she must be saved from. Maybe even a nip slip if we’re lucky.

William Finkelstein wrote the script and filming is expected to begin soon.

I’m still holding out hope for this film. After all, it’s Werner Herzog, one of the greatest living directors working today. And he’s badass. Defintely the most badass director working today. Anyways, I just wish they changed the title since it appears this is a "in title" only remake. In fact Herzog, keeps repeating (who knows if its true since he’s wiley sort of guy) that he’s never seen the original film or read the screenplay. I guess we’ll have to wait and see.

Yeah, so much of my concern has to do with Cage, now Xzibit and I am also not a huge fan of Mendes either. It just seems so odd. However, as with all movies, and as you mention it is Herzog, we will just have to wait and see.
