'21' Heads for the Top While 'Horton' Hangs Strong at the Friday Box-Office

If you went to see 'Drillbit Taylor' just commit yourself right now

I know, $1.9 million for a movie isn't a lot of money and the estimated $5.8 million Drillbit Taylor will end up making this weekend isn't a whole lot either. However, with primarily bad reviews and what I can only assume to be bad word-of-mouth it baffles me how people can still turnout for a film. Vantage Point was the previous film that baffled me and how that film has amassed $66.9 million to date is beyond me. Are people just this bored, do they not pay attention to what other people think or do they go because they genuinely think these movies looks good? Whatever the reason, they need to be stopped.

As for the more newsworthy results this weekend 21 goes ahead and performs quite well considering it is yet another film to receive lackluster reviews. The flick managed $8.2 million on Friday and is estimated to reach the $23+ million mark which will give it $6 million more than our Box Office Oracle estimated. What's going on in the lab Oracle? Perhaps 21 won't perform so well on Saturday and Sunday and ironically fall to $21 million for the weekend just to keep people on their toes.

Two other notable new releases are Superhero Movie and Stop Loss. Somehow, the spoof movies continue to woo audiences into seeing them as Superhero Movie managed $3.3 million on Friday and is estimated to hit the $8.75 million mark for the weekend. Not great numbers, but I don't think Dimension could have expected much more.

Stop Loss set out to try and prove people would still go see a movie about the war in Iraq and failed as the film pulled in a meager $1.65 million on Friday and is expected to hit only $4.65 million for the weekend giving it a 7th place finish.

Fox's Horton Hears a Who continues to hold strong after two weeks in the top spot it will pull in second this weekend after $5 million on Friday on its way to an estimated $17.9 million for the weekend.

As for the new releases that didn't make the top ten, one performed quite well while another completely tanked. Chapter 27 was released in only one theater and pulled in $15k on Friday and should hit about $21k for the weekend. On the bad end of things there is Picturehouse's Run Fatboy Run opened on 1,133 screens and only pulled in $675k on Friday and an expected $2 million for the weekend giving it only $1,728 per theater. Not impressive.

As we head into Summer 2008 I think we can expect these kinds of lackluster weekend throughout April with films like Leatherheads, Forgetting Sarah Marshall and just maybe Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay being the April headliners. Stay tuned as Laremy will wrap the weekend up tomorrow.
