2009 Golden Globe Awards Live Blog: Winners and Commentary

And we are go for live blogging...

6:01:28 PM: Oh, and it's a commercial break so go get yourself a snack.

6:05:12 PM: Tom Brokaw is out there because he is HUGE in the movie and TV entertainment biz.

6:05:42 PM: He is announcing Frost/Nixon as a nom… This would be great if John McCain was wandering around behind him.

6:06:31 PM: Best thing about Frost/Nixon was how they treated it like it was David Frost studying for an SAT test.

6:06:55 PM: Colin Farrell announcing Foreign Film winner. This could be my first miss, I had Gomorrah.

6:07:34 PM: And the winner is… Waltz With Bashir

6:08:07 PM: RopeofSilicon readers are one up on me. Damn you! Nah, congrats. :)

6:08:38 PM: Nah, damn you!

6:09:53 PM: Aaron Eckhart and Maggie G. announcing Best Actress in TV Movie/Mini Series

6:10:39 PM: Gotta be Linney in "John Adams"

6:11:04 PM: I think I can say that for everything…

6:11:27 PM: And Linney takes it… her first win in four Golden Globe nominations.

6:12:14 PM: Oh, and for those that don't know, RopeofSilicon has the complete Golden Globe history right here including live updates for this year's awards if you don't want to follow my banter.

6:13:22 PM: And another commercial break… Announcer just said when we get back we will have "more of the most beautiful stars in the world." Just gotta laugh at the idolatry.

6:17:48 PM: We're back and Gerard Butler is here to announce In Bruges as a comedy nominee… great movie and underappreciated.

6:19:05 PM: A skinnied up Seth Rogen and the beautiful Elizabeth Banks out to present Best Screenplay… My pick Slumdog

6:20:02 PM: Will Eric Roth prove me wrong?

6:20:12 PM: And the Globe goes to Simon Beaufoy for Slumdog Millionaire!

6:21:49 PM: Amy Poehler and Patrick Dempsey out to announce Actor for TV Series (Comedy/Musical) and they are getting straight to the point…

6:22:26 PM: And the winner is… Alec Baldwin for "30 Rock", great show.

6:23:11 PM: This is Baldwin's second time winning the Globe for the same role.

6:24:31 PM: Commercial break and the Ernst and Young folk are seen holding the silver briefcases with the winners' names in them… I guess that is just another attempt to clear up the Hathaway website mistake.

6:28:41 PM: Renee Zellweger is out and looking… different… she is introducing The Reader as a drama nominee

6:29:47 PM: Had to look up how to spell her last name, I never get it right…

6:30:21 PM: Megan Fox and Terrence Howard presenting together. One can act, one can't, I leave the decision up to you as to which is which… here comes Actor in TV Movie/Mini Series

6:31:03 PM: Should we just guess Paul Giamatti in "John Adams"?

6:31:33 PM: And the winner is Paul Giamatti in "John Adams"… I just saw your jaw drop.

6:32:13 PM: I am surprised to hear this is Giamatti's first Globe win… Congrats!

6:33:23 PM: Looking at the comments we have Spain, the UK and Cali all in the house… Gotta love the diversity of the Internet! Welcome all! Who else is out there?

6:34:13 PM: Glenn Close and Laurence Fishburne announcing best TV comedy…

6:34:36 PM: Let's guess… "30 Rock"

6:34:52 PM: And the winner is… "30 Rock"

6:36:37 PM: Tracey Morgan is accepting and says that he had an agreement with Tina Fey that if Barack Obama won he would now be the spokesman for the show… I know a lot of people don't like him, but I think he is great on this show.

6:38:16 PM: Yet another commercial break… Get a Coke but drink it slow to avoid the hiccups

6:42:55 PM: Pierce Brosnan is out there now to announce Mamma Mia! as a Musical/Comedy nominee… coincidentally enough it was my #1 worst movie of the year.

6:44:32 PM: Kate Beckinsale and Puffy on stage together.

6:45:02 PM: They are announcing Best Score, or as Puffy says, "Best Soundtrack"

6:45:48 PM: And A.R. Rahman wins it for Slumdog Millionaire… still just the one miss for me…

6:47:04 PM: David Duchovny and Jane Krakowski out to announce Best Actress in a TV series Comedy/Musical…

6:48:09 PM: Is this gonna be Tina Fey for "30 Rock"? 2008 was sorta her year…

6:48:29 PM: And the winner is… Tina Fey for "30 Rock".

6:49:20 PM: Tina Fey: "Thank you to the Hollywood Foreign Press, as a kid I had all the Hollywood Foreign Press action figures."

6:49:53 PM: Now she as addressing all the people on the Internet that don't like her telling them they can "suck it".

6:52:18 PM: Oh, and if I remember correctly the RopeofSilicon User Poll is still 100% for the movie winners…

6:53:24 PM: Oh, and at the top of the hour it looks like the presentation for Steven Spielberg for the Cecil B. deMille Award. That's going to be a slow time for updates… But I have something "special" planned. Special is in quotes because it really isn't all that special. :)

6:55:05 PM: Okay, deMille award is here with Martin Scorsese presenting… go to the next page for a little fun in the meantime…

Great predictions

I predict Slumdog will sweep. If any of you haven't seen it find your nearest indie theatre and GO!
Not for the faint of heart though.

Glad Gabriel Byrne won. He is so very talented. If you ever have an opportunity to see him in theatre live do so. Keep the results coming. You are far more entertaining than the shows….all are a star studded snore fest. By the way did anyone else notice Tom Hanks wife's dress. She was pushed up in that dress. Goodness! Hey you should cover the inaugural events for us.

I think they could've waited 10 more years with Spielberg once he had managed to direct at least ONE more classic and 3/4 commercially successful garbage. Someone like Sidney Lumet seemed more fitting to me.

CONGRATULATIONS KATEEEE!
I'M SOOOO HAPPY FOR HER! That was very unexpected….I thought Meryl would get it?? Still, she truly does deserve it. I bet she's eccstatic. From what I've heard she's crying again. :( Poor darling. Too many awards in one night – she's not used to the attention lol…

Go Kate!

Thanks Ropeofsilicon for all the great blogging. Even though I got to watch the live broadcast, your blog, Brad, was a nice addition! I was very happy about the results – except for Best Picture (Drama). I mean, Slumdog Millionaire was brilliant – but there is no way it was better than Revolutionary Road (my pick for best Picture). Also, why the hell wasn't Gran Torino nominated for Best Picture? or Eastwood for Actor? Makes no sense.

Great broadcast – kudos to Mickey Rourke for his phenomenal comeback (the greatest of the decade). Also, could someone please let Ricky Gervais host the Oscars, Globes, Emmy's or some award show? His comments were actually funny. Instead, the Academy chose…..Hugh Jackman? The guy is eye-candy…not host-material.

Was very pleased to see real glamour return to Hollywood! So beautiful, graceful, classy were Kate Winslet, Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz, Eva Mendez, Demi Moore… BRAVO ladies. JLo and Bionce however, should forgo the tight fitting, revealing, flashy dresses. They don't have the figure for it and the public and fashion critiques should be honest about it.
