2008 Oscar Winner Predictions

Who will win? Here's a guess...

Achievement in makeup
La Vie en Rose
Norbit
Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End

If Norbit were to win this I think a few suicides may actually occur at the exact same time. La Vie en Rose is the logical pick here.

Achievement in film editing
The Bourne Ultimatum
The Diving Bell and the Butterfly
Into the Wild
No Country for Old Men
There Will Be Blood

The Diving Bell and the Butterfly is the most experimental and risky film I have seen in quite some time and the success of the film has a lot to do with the acting and the directing, but the editing was key. Therefore it has to win this award.

Best foreign language film of the year
Beaufort
The Counterfeiters
Katyn
Mongol
12

4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days is quite possibly the best "film" I have ever seen, and I am speaking purely on a filmmaking basis on this one. The fact that it was not on the short list for best foreign language film is a travesty and since it wasn't on the short list it obviously isn't a nominee. All we are left with are five films I have never seen and I am going with The Counterfeiters because it was the only one screened here in Seattle and therefore would have been the only one I could have seen.

Achievement in music written for motion pictures (Original score)
Atonement
The Kite Runner
Michael Clayton
Ratatouille
3:10 to Yuma

I think this award should go to Alexandre Desplat for Lust, Caution but since it is not on the list it will be hard for a win. Therefore, I have to go with my second favorite score from 2007 in Atonement.

Achievement in music written for motion pictures (Original song)
"Falling Slowly" from Once
"Happy Working Song" from Enchanted
"Raise It Up" from August Rush
"So Close" from Enchanted
"That’s How You Know" from Enchanted

It's finally going to be a win for Once, one of the best films of 2007 that is hardly getting any recognition (David Fincher's Zodiac is in the same club).

Achievement in sound editing
The Bourne Ultimatum
No Country for Old Men
Ratatouille
There Will Be Blood
Transformers

Kevin O'Connell has been nominated 20 times now without a win, I think number 20 is the key as Transformers will take this one.

Achievement in sound mixing
The Bourne Ultimatum
No Country for Old Men
Ratatouille
3:10 to Yuma
Transformers

Another win for Transformers.

Achievement in visual effects
The Golden Compass
Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End
Transformers

You guessed it, I pick Transformers
to take home three Oscars on Sunday.

Adapted screenplay
Christopher Hampton, Atonement
Sarah Polley, Away from Her
Ronald Harwood, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly
Joel and Ethan Coen, No Country for Old Men
Paul Thomas Anderson, There Will Be Blood

The Coen fun continues with what I consider to be another lock.

Original screenplay
Diablo Cody, Juno
Nancy Oliver, Lars and the Real Girl
Tony Gilroy, Michael Clayton
Jan Pinkava, Jim Capobianco, Brad Bird, Ratatouille
Tamara Jenkins, The Savages

People seem to finally be joining me in the loathing of the love for Juno's Diablo Cody, but I don't think that is enough to stop her quirky original screenplay from taking home Oscar gold giving everyone one last chance to mention that she used to be a stripper (see I took my one last chance).

Win Tallies

  • Atonement (3)
  • No Country for Old Men (3)
  • Transformers (3)
  • La Vie en Rose (2)
  • The Counterfeiters (1)
  • The Diving Bell and the Butterfly (1)
  • Gone Baby Gone (1)
  • Into the Wild (1)
  • Juno (1)
  • Once (1)
  • Ratatouille (1)
  • There Will Be Blood (1)
  • Sicko (1)

I hate to say this but there is just no excuse to have only seen one of the documentaries out of the list of nominees. The sad thing is I would bet most people have ignored those films as well and I think it really speaks to quite a bit with whats wrong with the world these days. People will watch movie after movie as long as it has thier favorite star in it but if its a documentary that actually has some relevance in whats going on in the world we live in they suddenly have no interest in seeing them and ultimately dont see them.

The funny thing is the documentaries made this last year were far more impressive than most of the other films made during the year. Its just a shame people just dont care about these films at all.

Sorry, but I think the only other one screened here in Seattle was Taxi to the Dark Side and sometimes I have to bite the bullet and cover what the majority of the people are going to see… I guess that would count as an excuse, and a legitimate one if you ask me.

I guess that's the price I pay for running a 24/7 movie news website virtually on my own. My apologies.

Actually, War/Dance screened here, but it was a last minute announcement. It was that, No End in Sight, SiCKO and Taxi to the Darkside. I don't think the final nominee ever actually got a screening.

They were all pretty good choices, though, I have to say. As much as it pained me not to see In the Shadow of the Moon, Crazy Love or (especially) King of Kong on this list, it was hard to quibble with those four making the cut.

You're right, however, it's impossible to watch (let alone review) everything. I had to request screeners on two of those still never found the time to write anything about them.
