2008 OSCAR PREDICTIONS: The Acting Categories

A lot of guessing will be meaningless tomorrow morning

AMPAS

Welcome to part two of our prognosticating coverage for the upcoming Oscar nominations. Now last time we looked at the Best Picture and Director races and now we get too look at a whole slew of more good-looking people. The Coens are some ugly bastards and they can't touch the dreaminess of one George Timothy Clooney.

But first, we take a nice little gander at the ladies, including the sultry, menopause-astic Julie Christie!

BEST ACTRESS

Below are the only actresses who have the slightest chance at an Oscar nomination.

Keira Knightley, Atonement
Ellen Page, Juno
Helena Bonham Carter, Sweeney Todd
Angelina Jolie, A Mighty Heart
Marion Cotillard, La Vie en Rose
Julie Christie, Away from Her
Cate Blanchett, Elizabeth: The Golden Age
Amy Adams, Enchanted

The Locks: Marion Cotillard (La Vie en Rose), Julie Christie (Away from Her), Ellen Page (Juno)

I really almost consider all five of my nominees locks but you never really know. Funny things happen. I thought Knightley was a lock months ago but uh-uh, that isn't happening. Shows to go ya. Helena Bonham Carter could upset if Sweeney Todd goes but even if she does, she may not get the lead actress nod. And Amy Adams would be a serious long shot because that campaign died almost as fast as it started.

I think it would just be wrong if the Academy stiffed Angelina Jolie and the only reason I'm a little iffy on Cate Blanchett is because the nomination would be for a (reportedly) bad movie. And maybe some members think a supporting nod would be enough for Cate. Still, I doubt it.

The Best Actress Nominees for 2007 will be:

Julie Christie, Away from Her
Cate Blanchett, Elizabeth: The Golden Age
Ellen Page, Juno
Marion Cotillard, La Vie en Rose
Angelina Jolie, A Mighty Heart

Boring, I know. This the same list of nominees for the SAG but let's face it, the Best Actress race is always pretty boring because the ladies just don't get enough good roles. Less good roles means less great performances and less space for me to sort through all the contenders.

Spoilers that give me the most pause: No one. None of the other contenders really scare me all that much. I'm going to get cocky and say I've nailed this one.
