The Golden Globe nominees were announced today and there were hardly any surprises. One fact, that can hardly be considered a surprise, was that the HFPA continues to play by their own rules, most notably in the fact that they have seven nominees for Best Motion Picture Drama. The last three entries in that category have got to be Eastern Promises, Michael Clayton and fluff piece The Great Debaters.

The best part of the nominations is that the best film of the year rose to the top as Atonement pulled seven total nominations including a rather surprising nom for Saoirse Ronan for Best Supporting Actress.

Atonement's closest competition was Charlie Wilson's War with five nominations and three others tied with four, including No Country for Old Men, Sweeney Todd and American Gangster.

Somehow Persepolis gets nominated for Best Foreign Film, but not animation as the terrible Bee Movie earned a nom only to surely loose to Ratatouille.

The one name I was happy to see among the nominees was Viggo Mortenson for Eastern Promises, a spot that easily could have gone to Frank Langella or Emile Hirsch.

The only "real" snub I notice is the fact that Once didn't pull down a single nomination. Not for Best Motion Picture (Musical/Comedy) or Best Song in which you could take your pick. How that happens is beyond me.

On the TV side the two shows that took the most noms are "Damages" and "Longford".

The "The 65th Annual Golden Globe Awards" will take place Sunday, January 13, 2008 at The Beverly Hilton with a live telecast airing on NBC at 8 PM (EST) at which time we will have live winner updates as well as a live diary reaction and a full recap.
