Nothing is safe anymore, books are being sold as movies before they are even officially books. Today Variety revealed that Darren Aronofsky is in negotiations to helm the feature film adaptation of Shannon Burke's "Black Flies" for Paramount Pictures.

The novel, which has not even been set with a publisher, revolves around a young man who becomes an emergency medical technician in Harlem, a temporary stop before he enters medical school. There, he experiences a range of crises and stressful misadventures, including a mentor who has been numbed to the point that he makes a wrong decision in a life-and-death situation.

Burke is a former EMT in Harlem whose experienced previously informed her novel "Safelight" and Paramount is currently searching for a scribe to adapt Burke's story into a screenplay.

Aronofsky is currently waiting in the winds as Warner Bros. has continually pushed out his next film The Fountain, which stars Hugh Jackman and Rachel Weisz. The Fountain is currently straddled with a TBA 2006 release so who knows when we will see it.
