An Oscar Surprise Could Happen Very Early

How long before the waters get muddied?

A site going by the name of Cinemascopian is claiming to have the schedule for the 2009 Oscar presentation and it is certainly different from last year's ceremony. If this is in fact the correct schedule the one major toss-up acting award would be announced as the first.

Best Supporting Actress is a category with Penelope Cruz as the current front-runner, but I don't know of any Oscar prognosticators that believe Cruz is a sure-fire lock even though most of them project her to be the winner. Doubt's Viola Davis is definitely the #1 contender to Cruz and Amy Adams, also from Doubt, is another name I don't think would surprise many if her name were to be called.

Another interesting piece to this puzzle is whether or not the Oscars will follow the BAFTA lead two years in a row. Last year the BAFTA winners for acting all went on to win at the Oscars and many are wondering if that will happen again this year. If it were to happen it would mean Cruz would take Supporting and also mean Mickey Rourke would end up being the winner for Best Actor over Sean Penn. No one is betting against Heath Ledger for Best Supporting Actor, but the Best Actress race is a heated one with Kate Winslet going head-to-head with award season regular Meryl Streep.

So, keep your eyes open at the beginning of the show, it might not be too long before things get interesting and remember I will be here all day tomorrow with live-blogging and live winner updates.
