Amy Adams is the latest name to join the cast of David O. Russell's The Fighter as she joins Mark Wahlberg, Christian Bale and Melissa Leo in the Paramount Pictures drama which is set to begin shooting next month in Lowell, Massachusetts.

The Fighter follows boxer "Irish" Micky Ward's unlikely road to the world lightweight title. His Rocky-like rise was shepherded by half-brother Dicky, a boxer-turned-trainer who rebounded in life after nearly being KO'd by drugs and crime. Adams will play Charlene, a tough, gritty bartender and former college high-jumper from Massachusetts who ends up dating Mickey. Leo plays Wahlberg and Bale's mother.

Adams recently starred in Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian and is set to star opposite Meryl Streep yet again in Julie and Julia on August 7. She will also be seen in Anand Tucker's Leap Year in which she plays a young woman who travels to Dublin to propose to her boyfriend on Leap Day. When weather forces her to veer off course, she enlists a cynical Irish innkeeper (Matthew Goode) to join her on a cross-country trip.

    @Gaston: ummmm…I dunno. I have a feeling the academy hasn't warmed up to him. American Psycho was a really good performance and he didn't get a nomination. They might have something against him…

    I think without Aronofsky this would be a tough film to be a winner. Russell's ok, but I don't think he can make a movie worthy of awards.

    @ eric ,,,,exactly my thoughts. not to mention his performance in the machinist and 3.10 to yuma was excellent aswell

    @Eric: i think the same thing!
    but is he really interesting by an Oscar? he dislikes promotions and usually doesn't go at official events!
    but the casting is really interesting!

  7. Gaston

    @Eric: Yeah, you're right, and in my opinion the Academy has been plain unfare with him. I believe that his performance in 3:10 to Yuma was also worthy for a nomination, and instead he got nothing. I don't know what it takes for the Academy for consider once and for all Christian Bale.

    I think the Academy is afraid to give Bale the nom because if he doesnt win…they know that he will probably storm the stage in a fit of rage and curse the Academy and everyone in the building.

    @Gaston: Well I guess what I was getting at was–and I'm going to get gutted for saying this–but I really don't think he deserves one. Sometimes he crosses the line with his characters and goes too far, Terminator Salvation is a prime example of this. In "I'm Not There" he kinda fell into the myriad of other performers. He seems to fall to the wayside when he shares top billing.

    In Public Enemies I'm curious to see if he can hold his own against Depp and Cotillard, I'm pretty sure he can with Depp but Cotillard is another story.

    @Eric: Once again before I'm gutted, he hasn't received a golden globe nomination either, those tend to be pre-cursors to the Oscars more less, so clearly there's something that the HFPA and the AMPAS don't like about him.

    eh ? all the oscar talk and the movie has not even begun shooting… i love me some bale but thats ridiculous talk… the cast in this looks solid love amy adams in anything and everything… even sunshine cleaning had its moments… this one though might be a bit of a stretch for her… a tough gritty bartender? interesting to watch…

    @Eric:"I'm curious to see if he can hold his own against Depp and Cotillard, I'm pretty sure he can with Depp." Please dont compare Christian Bale's acting against the Johnny Depp. They perform for different reasons and its very obvious. Depp acts because it's something that he loves to do. It doesnt matter to him if it is a huge blockbuster hit. He researches his characters and if he believes in the film he does it, and he does it with brilliance.
    Bale usually goes for the big blockbusters. I will not say he always does because I am sure he has done some smaller work, but no where near the amount that Depp has done. It seems that he is in it more for the money, rather than a cause.
    The way Depp acts, it is obvious he believes in something more on the screen. He takes the best from the legends of old and molds into something special for today's cinema. That is why everyone enjoys him so much. Depp is clearly the better actor

  13. Eric

    @BR: Depp lover, much?

    "Depp acts because it's something that he loves to do…" I'm pretty sure it's the same for every actor and actress working. They don't perform because the have to, it's because they want to. I can't recall an actor saying they hate acting, if they did one could assume they would leave the business, no?

    Besides, only recently has Bale's resume filled with the blockbuster movies…so has Depp's–um, Pirates of the Caribbean 1,2,3, 4, and Sin City 3. Both have their fair share of commercial and art-house films on their roster's and both will continue to keep that balance in the coming years, I think/hope.

    Either way I have no intentions of getting into a Deep vs. Bale argument right now, I personally prefer Cotillard to both Depp and Bale. Her performance in La Vie En Rose is better than anything that Depp and Bale currently have.

  14. BR

    @Eric: Yeah, I think I have a man crush on Depp.

    Why are you bringing up Sin City 3 when Sin City 2 has not even been fully confirmed? Depp's only rumored to play in Sin City 3, nothing has been confirmed on his part. What other big blockbuster has Depp been in besides POTC? I cant think of any.
    True, Bale has only recently started acting in blockbusters (2005), but I cant watch him on screen and truly convince myself that he enjoys what he is doing. He plays a one-sided, boring character in just about every film he is in now. American Psycho was the only really good Christian Bale movie I have seen. TDK was brilliant because of Ledger not Bale, he almost ruined it.
    I dont want to argue either, im just saying that Depp is the better actor, by far!

  15. Atl Roller

    @Eric & BR: I agree with BR, but in Eric's defense, Bale did just recently start doing blockbuster films. And as far as I have read, Bale has done very well in Public Enemies.

  16. Eric

    @BR: Yeah I figured that much…

    My bad, I should have read a little more to the right. Hmm you are indeed right, he doesn't do many blockbusters, most of his movies tend to break even with the budget, on the domestic front. Like Secret Window, Sweeney Todd, From Hell, Blow, Sleepy Hollow. I'm pretty sure it's the same if not worse for Bale–3:10 to Yuma, I'm Not There, The New World, even Terminator Salvation–my source, Box Office Mojo.

    Almost the same thing is happening to Depp, sometimes I get the feeling where the character is different but the method feels almost the same. Like while I was watching Sweeney Todd I couldn't fully enjoy the performance because there were facets that I saw in Pirates of the Caribbean.

    It's the same with Bale, Terminator Salvation and The Dark Knight were more less the same guttural grunts. This is why I'm looking forward to Public Enemies, I'm curious to see them both, I'm not a big fan of either. If I remember, the original quote that started this was, "I'm curious to see if [Bale] can hold his own against Depp and Cotillard, I'm pretty sure he can with Depp," If you quoted the sentence verbatim, I went on to say that Cotillard is another story. She is the main reason I'm going to Public Enemies, Not for Depp, Bale or Mann.

    "I dont want to argue either, im just saying that Depp is the better actor, by far!" (Doesn't seem that way!)

    For me, between all three, I think that Cotillard is better and will outshine them both in the film.
