American Society of Cinematographers Announce Their 2013 Awards Nominations

This is the last pre-Oscar nom help you're going to get

The final guild and/or society nominations that were left to be announced before tomorrow's 2013 Oscar nominations have arrived as the American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) have revealed their nominations for 2013 and of the five nominees there are three I would say seem to be locks for Oscar noms and two that will be doing battle to the final bell.

The locks would seem to be Claudio Miranda (Life of Pi), Janusz Kaminski (Lincoln) and Roger Deakins (Skyfall) while the ASC also nominated Seamus McGarvey (Anna Karenina) and Danny Cohen (Les Miserables). McGarvey and Cohen are currently in the #6 and #7 slots in my Best Cinematography predictions with Greig Fraser (Zero Dark Thirty) and Mihai Malaimare Jr. (The Master) in at #4 and #5 respectively, but these nods certainly give me pause.

Just yesterday I moved McGarvey out of the top five down to #7, while also writing the following:

It was, however, a hard choice down near the bottom of the top five and trying to figure just where Zero Dark Thirty, The Master, Les Miserables and Anna Karenina would finish. The order may suggest confidence, but I could really see any combination of those four taking up the final two spots.

It would seem I'm not too far off and I'm beginning to think the field may switch to match up with the ASC exactly.

Last year there was only one difference between the ASC and Academy when Hoyte van Hoytema (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy) snagged an ASC nom and Janusz Kaminski (War Horse) was nominated by the Academy. The year before the nominations matched up exactly and the year before that only one difference. So, as of late, these are nominations that can serve as good predictors.

    The lack recognition for either The Master or Django is a travesty. Django has never been a player in this category but I actually think it has the best cinematography of the year...even better than The Master. There are some shots in Django that could be paintings, and others that are just pure art...the blood splattering on the cotton and the torches of the bagheads (the KKK didn't exist pre-Civil War) riding over the hill in particular. That last shot, coupled with the music, gave me goosebumps both times I saw the film.

    Life of Pi, Skyfall, Lincoln, and Les Mis all seem to be locks. The fact that Life of Pi, which is probably 75% green screen will get nominated over The Master and its gorgeous 70mm photography is an absolutely disgusting to me. And it's a sad, sad commentary on the future of *movies* (there are very few *films* made anymore). All anyone cares about is whether it looks pretty; that fact that the imagery in Life of Pi was mostly created by programmers, as opposed to artists with a camera, seems completely lost on anyone.

    How in God's green Earth did "The Master" not get in?! I'm shocked.

    I'm never not shocked every time The Master doesn't get a cinematography nod.

    I'm also surprised that Life of Pi keeps getting cinematography nods, I understand the film is based mostly on visuals and it usually looks stunning, but the shifting aspect ratio in scenes and the fact that most the visuals are artificial baffle me as to why it's so acclaimed. When The Master's visual beauty is feasible and real.

    I'd like to echo the sentiments regarding The Master, a beautifully shot film. I understand (don't like, but understand) Oscar voters getting pissy about Joaquin Phoenix' comments and keeping him off the Best Actor list but the fact that this film is overall getting neglected just baffles me.

    Kaminski needs to get hit by a bus or something so that Spielberg can get some life back into his cinematography, for over a decade most of his films have been bloodless-looking or just gloomy.
