Sony has revealed the first two official pictures from David O. Russell's American Hustle featuring Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper and Amy Adams and it's pretty damned hard not to take special note of their haircuts.

Based on the true story of a notorious financial con artist (Bale) and his mistress/partner in crime (Adams), American Hustle follows their story as they are forced to work with an out of control federal agent (Cooper) to turn the tables on other con artists, mobsters, and politicians. At the epicenter of the entire tale, is the passionate and volatile leader of the New Jersey state assembly (Jeremy Renner) who is also the local hero and mayor of impoverished Camden.

Now while that description says "based on a true story" I'm already happy to read earlier word from producer Charles Roven speaking with The Playlist and saying, "The film has really become a fictitious movie that takes place during the time of Abscam, and has some Abscam in it. But it's by no mean the true story of Abscam, the Zero Dark Thirty version of that story."

The pictures arrive from USA Today where Russell draws parallels to today's economy saying, "That era was very much like our era now... The economy was not in a good place and people had to struggle to figure out how to reinvent themselves."

Russell is editing the film now for a limited December 13 release. The film will expand on Christmas Day.

Cannot wait! The ensemble is incredible. The script was on the blacklist. And David O. Russell is directing/writing. Wouldn't be surprised to see this one dominate the Oscars.

  • Andrew J.S.

Hopefully this means we should expect a trailer in the next week or two.

    • Stephen

My guess is that they will have a trailer for this in front of Elysium. Just a hunch.

  • Ian

Really looking forward to this one. Nice to see Russell take on three completely different genres three films in a row.

  • Torryz

I too am really looking forward to this but I could do without Amy Adams.

    • Chris

Really? I think she's one of the best actors working today. I do find it hard to believe Bale would cheat on Jennifer Lawrence's character with her though. Adams is gorgeous, but JLA is JLA.

  • Jamie

If those haircuts are any indication, this is going to be epic.

    • Ian

That word gets thrown around WAY too liberally. A haircut is not epic by any sense of the definition, nor do I think you can in any way assume a movie will be epic because of haircuts.

      • andyluvsfilms

Now if we're talking cravats, Bale's is definitely epic

      • Jamie

Epic reply. You must have great hair.

  • Newbourne

So they Argoed the story, huh? Good call.

    • Hello Kitty

Funny you should say that. Affleck was originally set to direct.

      • Chris

I bet Afflecks would be more close to the original script. Probably more serious too. I think Russell made huge adjustments to the script.

        • Hello Kitty

I haven't read the script, but Russell does serious stuff too, so I'm ok with it.

          • Chris

I know Russell can, but Affleck probably would be more serious. I heard Russell emphasizes the love story more than Abscam.

            • Hello Kitty

              Oh, yuck!

            • P.

I would say Russell emphasises the characters over the political story. Whether you liked Argo or didn't, the characters were the movie's weak points - they weren't people, they were sketches servicing the plot. Which is very similar to the original American Bullshit script (so I agree with your original statement). Russell is more interested in people and their lives than the politics.

... Which is why I'm very very much looking forwards to this movie, in addition to the incredible cast.

  • JN Films

Adams doesn't look like she's going to far with the role but Bale and Cooper on the other hand look awesome.

    • Chris

Based upon 2 pics? I think the costume and make up looks great for all the characters.

      • JN Films

        *In the physical appearance department

        • Chris

Yeah I guess I agree. She just looks like Amy Adams. But in the pic she looks incredible.

  • andyluvsfilms

Yeps, loving that 70's style, looks especially good on the guys. Looks like a solid film and hopefully not long before we get a trailer

  • Cordia

A lot of comments on 2 pictures, also really diggin' the style

  • maja

Really like the style of's rare that pictures alter my interest in a film.

  • AS

Another brilliant performance from Christian Bale, no doubt. Very excited.

  • Yaz

Can't wait. Looks great. Love it when Bale get's to play eccentric. Here's hoping!

    • Josh McLaughlin

Yeah, somebody on the /Film site said that Bale resembles a young Steve Jobs in these pics, and I couldn't agree more.

  • Corbin

    Horray for more 70's style!

  • Winchester

The Abscam scandal/operation itself doesn't read particularly interestingly itself but if it's a fictionalised version that could help out. I'll see how it's going nearer release.
