AFI Top Ten Movies of 2012 Offer Nothing New

COMMENTS

'The Dark Knight Rises' over 'The Master'? I guess that's interesting

AFI Top Ten Movies of 2012Well, the race this year seems to be quite clear with only one real "surprise" among the AFI Top Ten Movies of 2012, that being the decision to go with The Dark Knight Rises over The Master. Otherwise, you're looking at a list that contains my predicted top ten Best Picture contenders, which tells me I'm really onto something.

Question now, I guess, if we were to take this list into serious consideration, would be to wonder if this year we will see ten nominees and if Quentin Tarantino's Django Unchained can get in.

Check out the top ten below and continue to salivate until Django Unchained, Zero Dark Thirty and Les Miserables remain on the release calendar horizon. Oh, and for a lot of you still, until Silver Linings Playbook finally expands.

  1. Argo
  2. Beasts of the Southern Wild
  3. The Dark Knight Rises
  4. Django Unchained
  5. Les Miserables
  6. Life of Pi
  7. Lincoln
  8. Moonrise Kingdom
  9. Silver Linings Playbook
  10. Zero Dark Thirty

The TV side looks like this:

  1. "American Horror Story"
  2. "Breaking Bad"
  3. "Game Change"
  4. "Game of Thrones"
  5. "Girls"
  6. "Homeland"
  7. "Louie"
  8. "Mad Men"
  9. "Modern Family"
  10. "The Walking Dead"

Kinda happy to see TDKR up there... I caught it again this weekend on bluray and despite the many flaws, I still think it's a rather enjoyable film and holds up pretty well. Can't deny it's affecting despite all those flaws... Just my opinion, of course. I'm sure many will disagree.

As for Django, I definitely feel there's potential for it to make it into the best picture race.

  2. G-Man says:

TDKR FTW!!! Sure it has its flaws, but for a lot of the mainstream audience and most people that watch movies, it is their favorite of the year. For that reason, glad to see it's getting recognition in these type of lists.

Thinking I'll use my Amazon Instant Video credit to check out "Beasts Of The Southern Wild".

  3. Winchester says:

Due to release patterns The Dark Knight Rises is the only film on their list I've even seen. It's not one of my favourites of the year though.

Not a big fan of Sons of Anarchy, but Boardwalk getting snubbed? Everytime i watch that show i feel its epic television. Wouldnt mind Shameless getting a look either.

  4. Michael says:

Very, very happy TDKR is on their list. My favorite movie of the year as of right now. ZDT has a very strong chance to change that though haha. Glad Lincoln is in there as well. Have to see the rest especially ZDT, Django, Les Mis, Argo, Silver Linings Playbook & Life of Pi.

  5. Gautam says:

Have watched 7 out the 10. [Django, ZDT and Les Mis remain]. Out of the 7, I feel Argo deserves the top spot. Beasts as 2nd choice also isn't bad. Though I would have preferred Moonrise. But I am surprised to see ZDT so lower down, expected it to be within Top 3.

  6. Dan says:

Seen Lincoln, Life of Pi, The Dark Knight Rises, and Argo. Immensely happy they've made the list as they along with Flight are my favorites of the year. Looking forward to Django, Les Miserables, and Zero DarkThirty. This has been a damn fine year for films of every type. I just want to punt David Denby for saying cinema is dead when you have a great year like this.

  7. Of the 10 mentioned, I've only seen 4 with Silver Linings, TDKR and Argo high on my personal Top 10 at the moment and it seems like I'm one of the rare few that really did not like Beasts.

  8. Dranderz says:

I've seen 7 of the 10, with Les Mis, Django, and ZDT to be released in a few weeks. Of the 7, I'm having trouble imagining any of them winning Best Picture, perhaps because I still think it will be Les Mis or ZDT...but that could be just because those directors have won in the last few years.

I honestly had something I enjoyed and respected about each individual film, as this is a strong year with a fantastic crop to choose from. But Lincoln seems to be the most likely of the 7, even if it wasn't my favorite...I just can't imagine Spielberg being nominated for Best Director, lest alone actually WINNING (Director and Picture usually winning together) for a film like Lincoln.

    • Gautam says:

Wait to be surprised. Speilberg not only will get nominated but also at the moment stands frontrunner along with Bigelow. And I am saying this without having liked Lincoln.

    • Dan says:

Or because it is heavily influenced by Greengrass and Nolan's last 6 films, and plays out more as a lesser remake. Don't get me wrong, it is a solid watch and one of the better Bond films, but lacks originality. When it opened people were proclaiming it the best Bond ever. That is BS. It is nowhere near From Russia with Love, Goldfinger, On Her Majesty's Secreat Service, or Casino Royale. It has its moments of brilliance, but is hardly the best in the series or year.

    • Chris138 says:

If they really felt that strongly about Skyfall they could have given it a special award like they did for The King's Speech and The Artist.

  9. Mikey says:

Of the five I've seen (Argo, TDKR, Moonrise, Lincoln, Silver Linings), four currently are in my top 10 with Lincoln being the odd one out. And I realize I'm in the minority with not liking Lincoln so there's no surprise there.

  10. Dale says:

I dislike alpha listings of "best" anything. If a group is going to get into the "best of" game, they should have the chutzpah to rank their choices. Although, in making their list they didn't stray beyond the obvious.

  11. Much happier with this list then most. DARK KNIGHT RISES + MOONRISE KINGDOM are my #1 and #2 respectively. I loved ARGO as well. Only other one I've seen is BEASTS, have to wait for the other 6 in Australia still!

  12. Kai Sacco says:

I'm so stoked to see "TDKR" on there, but disappointed with the absence of "Looper" and "Perks".

This season of "American Horror Story" is pretty out there and cool, but as the #1 show? That's insanity. "The Walking Dead" should be in the top five along with "Breaking Bad" in the #1 spot.

  13. Connor420 says:

I would remove Life of Pi and replace it with Looper. I liked Life of Pi, just wouldn't say it is one of the best of the year. However, I am very happy to see Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones, Homeland, and The Walking Dead on the best tv shows. Both great shows with their best seasons yet.
