Academy Penalizes 'Hurt Locker' Producer

You won't see Nicolas at the Oscars

The following press release just arrived in my Inbox regarding the much talked about emailing of Academy members by The Hurt Locker producer Nicolas Chartier.

I guess the severity of the penalty for his actions is up to you if the Academy went too far or not far enough as Chartier "has been denied attendance at the 82nd Academy Awards" as it appears the Academy was most upset about Chartier's disparaging remarks toward competing films, most obviously was Avatar, which he referred to in one email as the "$500M film" competing against an "independent" like Hurt Locker.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced today that, should "The Hurt Locker" be announced as the recipient of the Best Picture award at Sunday's ceremonies, only three of the picture's producers will be present for the celebration. The fourth of the film's credited producers, Nicolas Chartier, has been denied attendance at the 82nd Academy Awards® as a penalty for violating Academy campaigning standards.

Chartier had recently disseminated an email to certain Academy voters and other film industry figures in which he solicited votes for his own picture and disparaged one of the other contending films. Academy rules prohibit "casting a negative or derogatory light on a competing film." The executive committee of the Academy's Producers Branch, at a special session late Monday, ruled that the ethical lapse merited the revocation of Chartier's invitation to the Awards.

The group stopped short of recommending that the Academy governors rescind Chartier's nomination. If "The Hurt Locker" were to be selected as Best Picture, Chartier would receive his Oscar® statuette at some point subsequent to the March 7 ceremonies.

This news arrived in my Inbox approximately 90 minutes before voting for the 2010 Oscars closed, and if you are wondering, yes, Chartier will still be awarded an Oscar if The Hurt Locker wins, he just won't be there to thank anyone for it.

    What? Really? :(

At least he'll get his trophy.

I am very pleased with the Academy's decision. They shouldn't of just "ignored" it. Hes an idiot and deserved to be penalized. I hope this will conflict with THE HURT LOCKER winning Best Picture. It doesn't deserve to win and maybe after this whole stunt it won't and they deserved to be punished. This guy is so stupid.

    GO AVATAR FOR BEST PICTURE!!

Just b/c of a stupid e-mail response the film shouldn't win BP? What does a letter have to do w/the films chances? Please know what you're talking about before you actually SAY anything.

This seems fair. It won't harm the movie, or even revoke Chartier's Oscar, but it will serve as a reminder that the rules are in place for a reason and what he did was simply in bad taste. And now we can turn our attention to what's actually important – which film will and should win.

I respect the Academy's choice because something had to be done. I'm glad they just didn't ignore him as Avatar was a great film as well. If you want to win, win fair atleast and beat out any competetion that's how you'll know if your the best.
I hope that the email who it was sent to did not vote for The Hurt Locker as a result to penilize him even more!

Now, Im not `very sure that HL will actually won the BP Oscar. Think about "Gangs of New York" a few years ago.

I would take his prize. Really, he was to dumb, he does not deserve the award. I wouldn't go as far as penalize the movie, but I would make him persona non grata.
Just for being really stupid and anxious.

  7. Carson Dyle

Oh, well. I'm sure Hans Zimmer can just pretend to be him if HL wins.

cant wait for avatar to lose best picture so everyone will shut the f up about it, technically- decent film, the rest was retread sub par and mediocre

"disparaging remarks toward competing films, most obviously was Avatar, which he referred to in one email as the "$500M film" competing against an "independent" like Hurt Locker"

Oh my what a disparaging remarke! I'm sure glad they don't know what I consider a disparagin remark, I might get deported to a 3rd world country to be tortured for my supposed freedoms.
Sounds more like he's spreading his opinion about the other films. Opinions whether negative, positive or derogatory are still f***ing opinions last time I checked. Have we entered Equilibrium or something??

I think the Academy made the right decision. The film was not damaged by it, he wasn't hurt in the long run by them, and he was only hurt in the short term for his short term idiocy of that e-mail.

I agree…It sounds fair to me, rules are rules… the film is okay, and only he who make mistake have to 'pay' for his mistake….

ps: sorry if I make mistake :)

It's like not being able to walk at high school graduation. You still get the award… but it's not the same.

  13. markeels

I think the penalty is fair. I hope it won't hurt the film in any aspect. And the price that the stupid producer would pay is not only from the Academy but also from his destroyed reputation. So awarding him a trophy wouldn't mean much.

The man is simply anxious. His movie is going into the ring against a $500M James Cameron film. He did break a rule, and if the breaking of this rule merits the revoking of his invitation under established Academy standards then that's what ought to happen.

I don't believe that any further action needs to be taken – in particular, any action that would affect the movie itself, its chances, or the many other people involved in its production. The man is only human, and it's just a movie, there's no need to throw him to the lions or penalize anybody else over a silly little remark in an anxious and carelessly worded e-Mail.

God what a stupid idiot he was sending that email! That is DEFINITELY going to affect voters' decisions! I really hope it doesn't affect them too much though.

It'll be Chartier's fault if The Hurt Locker doesn't win. They were riding in to the Oscars with a Critics Choice and Bafta win for Best Picture, but this guy may have ruined it. Hopefully the Academy doesn't punished the other two producers for his screw up.
