A 'MacGyver' Movie? Really?

I really don't know what to say about this

I guess it is only appropriate following what seemed like the first "Saturday Night Live" in a long time where the insanely annoying "MacGruber" skit wasn't featured we learn from The Hollywood Reporter New Line Cinema is going to take it a step further and take a stab at turning the original television series "MacGyver" into a feature film. Yup, you read that right. I guess my 60-year-old mother will be happy.

Raffaella De Laurentiis, daughter of Dino De Laurentiis, is producing through her Raffaella Prods. along with Martha De Laurentiis and series creator Lee Zlotoff.

For those that don't know (not sure who that is) "MacGyver" was a science-oriented adventure series that ran from 1985-92 on ABC starring Richard Dean Anderson who most probably now know from the "Stargate" television series. Anderson starred as a character named MacGyver, a contemporary hero and role model who applies his scientific knowledge to ordinary items to create for himself and others a means of escape from impending doom. That, at least, is the description from Paramount who released the series on DVD, but the best description is to say it was a dude who would get into trouble and use sticks, chewing gum and a bit of baby's breath to get out of it. He truly was quite amazing.

I remember watching the show when I was about 10-years-old or so, but it seems like a ridiculous series to bring to the big screen and based on the long-failed attempts to bring '80s TV action-dramas such as "The A-Team" and "Magnum P.I." to the big screen I can't see this making it to theaters too soon. The A-Team looks to finally be underway with director Joe Carnahan attached to direct for a June 11, 2010 release, but little has been heard of the project since that announcement.

As for this "MacGyver" feature no writer is attached but apparently New Line "hopes to find a script that can acknowledge how the concept has staked a place into pop culture yet still makes for a serious and fun adventure movie." Whatever that means.

    "Whatever that means"

It means they are waiting for a script that once again takes a dump on a piece of my childhood while simultaneously milking a potential cash cow into veritable dessication.

Other than that, I'm optomistic. :)

[sarcasticmode] Yay! another one of my childhood memories they try to milk to death and putting it in a time it doesn't fit into at all. Oh joy!
I just cannot wait for the casting rumors to start and see loads of names that wouldn't be right at all. [\sacrasticmode]
…..Oh unpsecified deity Help us all! (sorry, I'm an atheist so wasn't sure what name to put down)

No, your 60 year old mother will be going "if it's not Richard Dean Anderson in the role, i'ts not MacGyver!" Bah, another attempt by studios to milk the boomer memories of nostaligic tv shows. I'll buy the DVDS of the show, thank you.

Yap, another reason why it won't work: MacGyver is Richard Dean Anderson, none other.
Talking about it, where is he now?

(sigh) Transformers, GI Joe, and now the Karate Kid and MacGyver. This is the epitome of raiding a sacred tomb.
