Universal actually screened the upcoming Death Race down here in San Diego for Comic Con as the press junket will be held on Sunday, but I wasn't allowed to see it since I wouldn't be able to attend the junket to shill their flick. However, I did receive a free pass from an alternate source, but didn't take advantage. When a studio won't even allow you to see a movie unless you are interviewing their talent that is never a good sign. After all, me seeing it didn't mean I had to put a review up right away. Oh well, it's the Hollywood PR game and you have to play it…
Personally I think this mash up of Mad Max meets Fast and the Furious looks entirely ridiculous, but I also think there is a door open for it to be entertaining. I know everyone loves to rag on director Paul W.S. Anderson and they may have a point considering the likes of Alien vs. Predator and Mortal Kombat. However, I personally enjoyed Resident Evil and I know there are folks that enjoy Event Horizon so I think the hatred is a bit undeserved. A lot of it, I believe, stems from AVP considering the fan base and just how bad that film was, but even that film wasn't as bad as so many others I have seen.
