2014 Oscar Predictions: Best Supporting Actress Update

I'm still cleaning up around the edges after my early 2014 Oscar predictions and today's update takes a look at the Best Supporting Actress category where I was shocked to find I didn't even have Oprah Winfrey (The Butler) on the list. And along with Winfrey I've added five more new contenders bringing the total to 27 with a lot of movement all over the board.

In the top five, however, my #1 remains the same as I see Amy Adams getting her fifth Oscar nomination for David O. Russell's American Hustle and finally taking home the hardware.

Cameron Diaz (The Counselor) slips down a notch, Julia Roberts (August: Osage County) moves up a slot and Winfrey debuts at #5 for what would be her second Oscar nomination after her nomination in 1986 for Steven Spielberg's The Color Purple.

The biggest move on the board is Carey Mulligan moving from #20 up to #4 for her work in Joel and Ethan Coen's Inside Llewyn Davis. I've seen Llewyn Davis and Mulligan is fantastic in it and delivers a performance and a character people will be talking about afterward. In my review from Cannes I commented on her performance saying, "[S]he's just as talented at spitting verbal hellfire in Davis' vicinity as she is at well-timed moments of tenderness." Read the full review here.

That said here's my top five once again.

  1. Amy Adams (American Hustle)
  2. Julia Roberts (August: Osage County)
  3. Cameron Diaz (The Counselor)
  4. Carey Mulligan (Inside Llewyn Davis)
  5. Oprah Winfrey (The Butler)

You can see the full Best Supporting Actress chart and five other new names, ranking all 27 contenders, right here. You will need to be a logged in member of RopeofSilicon to view any rankings beyond the top five, but registration is free so that shouldn't be too much trouble.

As much as I'd like to see Mulligan get nominated, I don't think the Academy will care

My list includes your top 3. I also have Octavia and Martindale, but Octavia might drop as you have seen the film and have lowered her chances

  • Kristina Morose

Saw early cut of "The Counselor" (Ridley's still working on it) and can only say that Diaz is absolutely fantastic. The closest to this performance of hers is "Vanilla Sky". But she's much more dangerous here, very sociopathic. Underneath all this sexiness there's something very dark and she absolutely nails it. I won't comment on the movie itself cause it's still in post-production but another performance you need to watch out from the movie is Bardem. He's awesome! He's so over the top but in a good way. Oh, and the work of Pitt is very sublime but I have a feeling he's gonna be overshadowed by Bardem (Reiner is bigger than life character) during awards season. Shame because both guys deserve recognition. Oh, if Adams also delivers it's gonna be neck by neck race between her and Diaz. And I still have a feeling Julia won't go for a category fraud. It's a leading role and she's the name.

Part of your comment should be cloaked in spoilers. You're being very disrespectful to people who haven't seen the film. That is all.

      How is Cruz and Fassbender?

Thanks for posting this, very interesting stuff. And I'm pretty sure there aren't spoilers in there, Vince.

If you want to go into the film blind, yes, some of the details provided are spoilery.

I think that Viola Davis in the two Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby movies (His and Hers) is going to deliver two performances that will catch the eye and get people talking. She plays the same character played from different viewpoints, which sounds like a great showcase for her talents. I would like to see her play more leads, but lead actress parts can be difficult to come by.

I understand your reluctance to put the Eleanor Rigby movies in your predictions, since two movies rather than one might split focus and votes. But it could also work in Davis' favor, reminding us how versatile and acute she is.

i'm a very big fan of Amy Adams work and I'm very dissapointed that she still has not won an Academy Award. She deserved it for THE MASTER but then again it's the Academy... I hope she will win this year.

    June Oscar Predictions

    1. Amy Adams- American Hustle
    2. Cameron Diaz- The Counselor
    3. Jennifer Garner- The Dallas Buyers Club
    4. Carey Mulligan- Inside Llewyn Davis
    5. Cate Blanchett- Monuments Men

Alt. Julia Roberts- August: Osage County

I still have faith that Jennifer Garner will deliver an astounding performance and get her first nomination

When I watch Juno now, I'm still surprised that Jennifer Garner missed out on a nomination for that part. Like you, I'm expecting her to be really good in The Dallas Buyers Club.

Well honestly I am not that surprised because even though she did good it wasn't that good and it was more Ellen Page's show and I do hope she gets nominated

    1. Amy Adams, American Hustle
    2. Julia Roberts, August: Osage County
    3. Margo Martindale, August: Osage County
    4. Cameron Diaz, The Counselor
    5. Carey Mulligan, Inside Llewyn Davis

    Alt. Oprah Winfrey, The Butler

I'm really holding out hope for Martindale to deliver an excellent performance. If I'm not mistaken, the actress that played her part on the stage won a Tony for the role. Martdinale also has an Emmy thanks to "Justified", where she was brilliant. I think this could be her year to breakout into the big leagues.

    1. Amy Adams, American Hustle
    2. Cameron Diaz, The Counselor
    3. Oprah Winfrey, The Butler
    4. Cate Blanchett, The Monuments Men
    5. Julianne Moore, Carrie

Adams will stay in mu number position because of her being so overdue and the role is the best one in the film where she is a manipulative british women that is loosly based on real events. Diaz has a role that could become iconic and she has been close in the past that she will probably get in this time. Winfrey will get in on her star power even if the film gets awful reviews. Blanchett I believe this year will repeat her double nominations also getting in lead but her supporting work coul stand out since she is the main women with the main cast mostly being men. Moore really should have won by now but early buzz suggests her performance needs to be watched when the oscars come around, personally I want Moore to get another nomination when the academy is ready to reward her but if she has to win on her sixth nomination hopefully this nomination will help give her more goodwill for being overdue.

I'm not sure where to place Adams and Roberts. Will they be Lead or Supporting? For now, I keep Adams in, and leave Roberts out, but things could change quickly.

    1. Amy Adams, American Hustle
    2. Cameron Diaz, The Counselor
    3. Carey Mulligan, Inside Llewyn Davis
    4. Margo Martindale, August: Osage County
    5. Jennifer Lawrence, American Hustle (O. Russell's actors are always a safe bet)

    Cate Blanchett, Monuments Men
    Jennifer Garner, Dallas Buyers Club
    Vanessa Redgrave, Foxcatcher
    Melissa Leo, Prisoners

    1. Margo Martindale- August: Osage County
    2. Julia Roberts- August: Osage County
    3. Cameron Diaz- The Counselor
    4. Sally Hawkins- Blue Jasmine
    5. June Squibb- Nebraska

If Amy Adams doesn't win it'll be the biggest upset since Glenn Close (HOW HAVE NEITHER WON????)
