Welcome to our 2013 Oscars Live Blog with up-to-the-minute live winners, commentary, red carpet coverage and overall merriment. We are kicking this thing off at 3:30 PM PST and carrying on until 9 PM PST, which means you better have food and water because it's going to be a long night.

To the right you can see the order in which the awards will be handed out and if you took a look at the reader prediction results compared to mine and my live-blogging partner, Laremy Legel, you know there are at least seven interesting races and the most interesting of which is the first of the night... Best Supporting Actor. I have placed an * next to the most interesting races of the night based on predictions, but for more on why I chose those, click here.

In case you're interested, myself, Laremy and the readers predicted Argo to win Best Picture, but don't think that doesn't mean Lincoln and even Silver Linings Playbook doesn't still stand a chance. As a matter of fact, to go along with the interesting races highlighted above, keep an eye on Best Director where Steven Spielberg faces stiff competition from Ang Lee (Life of Pi) and while most everyone expects Jennifer Lawrence (Silver Linings Playbook) to win Best Actress, Emmanuelle Riva (Amour has been coming on strong. I've highlighted those races with an on the schedule of events above.

It's going to be a lot of fun, and just to give you one more thing to think about, here are my Oscar counts per film based on my predictions (excluding the shorts):

  1. Life of Pi - 4 wins
  2. Argo - 3 wins
  3. Les Miserables - 3 wins
  4. Anna Karenina - 2 wins
  5. Lincoln - 2 wins
  6. Silver Linings Playbook - 2 wins
  7. Amour - 1 win
  8. Brave - 1 win
  9. Searching for Sugar Man - 1 win
  10. Skyfall - 1 win

As for what you can expect from this live blog, we will be posting up-to-the-second commentary with each update having either my name in red or Laremy's name in blue next to the time stamp. All winner announcements will be highlighted like this so they will be easy to spot and they'll also be listed in the right-hand-column on this page, just give it a refresh to update or participate in the comments below, which will also refresh the content of the page.

So get ready, in just a few short hours it all begins and hopefully you're prepared. We'll be back around 3:30 PST / 6:30 EST and we won't stop until the last award is handed out.

Stay tuned, we'll be beginning shortly...

[3:30:33 PM] Brad says: We are here and we are loving it! Jessica Chastain already walked the carpet... what is she doing here so early?

[3:31:53 PM] Brad says: Amy Adams is even here. I guess it would be more fun to get there early as opposed to later when the madness really gets underway.

[3:34:19 PM] Brad says: I have no idea what these OTRC people are all about or why a Real Housewife of Someplace Somewhere is on the panel. Brandi something?

[3:34:26 PM] Laremy says: Hi Brad!

[3:35:11 PM] Brad says: George something is chatting with Channing Tatum and a pregnant Jenna Dewan. George thinks Channing is humble.

[3:35:41 PM] Laremy says: I love Channing Tatum. But let's not forget he's in G.I. Joe 2. #NeverForget

[3:35:58 PM] Laremy says: I can reveal what Tatum is doing on the show: he's dancing. Scoop!

[3:36:39 PM] Brad says: Oh, C-Tates is doing something tonight? Will he do a Magic Mike stripper performance? Maybe an impromptu "Ladies of Tampa" with Matthew McConaughey even though that song was wrongly left off the nomination list for Best Original Song?

[3:37:42 PM] Laremy says: On second thought, he might be disavowing G.I. Joe

[3:38:46 PM] Brad says: Russ Leatherman is calling himself "Mr. Moviefone" and then predicting chalk. Take a risk Mr. Moviefone!

[3:38:55 PM] Laremy says: We've got a Russ Leatherman sighting! He's my favorite of all the Leathermans. Fred Leatherman is a real piece of work.

[3:39:01 PM] Brad says: Is Leatherman a real name btw?

[3:41:49 PM] Laremy says: I'm hungry. I ordered pizza for us but it hasn't come yet. I blame Brad.

[3:41:53 PM] Brad says: Quvenzhane Wallis has a little stuffed dog. Those young Oscar nominees are so crazy.

[3:43:37 PM] Brad says: You can tell all of these people sat home practicing how to say Quvenzhane because they are saying her name at every opportunity possible. At least they practiced.

[3:45:16 PM] Laremy says: The pizza is here! Wishing for things works!

[3:45:52 PM] Brad says: What will Anne Hathaway be wearing tonight? We are all dying to know!

[3:47:09 PM] Brad says: Laremy ordered pizza, which is something that makes me very happy. Pizza and the big debate over what Anne will wear at the Oscars... My life has led to this!

[3:47:14 PM] Laremy says: Probably a dress.

[3:48:55 PM] Laremy says: I also ordered Orange Crush soda because that's what I plan on doing for the next five hours.

[3:50:13 PM] Brad says: Zoe Saldana? How do the invites to this work? I don't think she's a member of the Academy, but I could be wrong.

[3:51:03 PM] Brad says: Oh, and a little tip while reading the live blog try to only refresh every few minutes so the server doesn't die. Thanks!

[3:53:51 PM] Laremy says: Sally Field and I have the same chance of winning an Oscar this evening.

[3:54:30 PM] Brad says: Sally Field and George just had a conversation, it was riveting.

[3:55:12 PM] Brad says: Oh man, Red Hot Twitter results! Brandi thinks Reese Witherspoon is the best dressed. This is getting really real.

[3:55:54 PM] Laremy says: Cheetara is making jokes for daaaaayzz. You guys are missing out.

[3:56:28 PM] Brad says: Jennifer Lawrence is wearing a comforter. Gotta keep warm at the Oscars.

[3:57:23 PM] Brad says: This is intense, the pre-red carpet show is ending and the actual red carpet show is about to begin. As a result, we're going to page two, join us will you.

  1. Gautam says:

I believe Best Supporting Actor, Best Actress and even Best Director are the most interesting ones. Among below the line, Best Sound Editing, Best Production Design, Best Original Screenplay are wide open. And obviously anything can happen in Shorts.

So, let's see how the most unpredictable Oscar race ever, turns out to be.

Though here are what I think could be the biggest upsets of the night,

    1. Naomi Watts wins Best Actress – She enjoys a strong peer support, and her vote base will not jump the ship, whereas many Lawrence/Chastain voters may jump to either Riva or Watts herself.
    2. Life of Pi wins Best Picture – It’s going to win more than 5 awards [maximum] on Oscar night and with a widespread support across different categories, it also manages to coupe Picture.
    3. Philip Seymour Hoffman wins Best Supporting Actor – Only place where members might decide to reward The Master.

    • Best director is definitely interesting. I really hope Ang Lee gets it. It's a massive directorial achievement. Life of Pi winning best picture will be the biggest surprise of the night although it would not 'upset' me.

  2. Winchester says:

Well, hope you all have fun blogging. Due to time differences I'll be heading to bed just as it's all happening and will catch the results on waking.

I'm curious because I have a feeling there are going to be more than a couple surprising results before the ride is over. I just can't quite decide where they will end up being. I guess my most controversial gut feel is some sort of upset in the Best Actor category. I know, I know..............precursors and general mood indicate Day Lewis has this in the bag..........but..........I dunno. The general lack of Lincoln to convert anything much into wins just has had me thinking about The Colour Purple back.

I really would be no more surprised to find it went to Phoenix at the last minute than it stays with Day Lewis. Time will tell.

  3. G-Man says:

Hanging out and watching some Gangs of New York to prepare. Does anyone else remember that Daniel Day-Lewis throws a knife at a poster of Abraham Lincoln? Thought that was pretty funny.

        3 - Silver Linings Playbook
        4 - Django
        5 - Argo
6 - Beasts of the southern wild
        7 - Amour
        8 - Les Miserables

        *Didn't watch Life of Pi

        • Life of Pi was great but it was let down by the writing at the start and ending, but the middle bulk is just incredible because of Ang Lee's directing and the visuals.

    • Kessler says:

      I would rank them as

      9. Amour
      8. Beasts of the Southern Wild.
      7. Life of Pi
      6. Les Miserables
      5. Silver Linings Playbook
      4. Django Unchained
      3. Zero Dark Thirty
      2. Lincoln
      1. Argo

        3. Argo
        2. Silver Linings Playbook
        1. Les Miserables

  5. Xarnis says:

The Oscars are really pushing the whole Seth Mcfarlane host thing. Hopefully he is as good as they're making him out to be.

Oh, and apparently the Manicam is back.

  6. Brad Smithee says:

    Look forward to the blog!

I hope of Argo wins anything, that Ben Affleck will go up there and say he's sorry that he pumped up America's role, and completely minimized Canada's role in the story. As President Carter said, 90% of the plan and execution was Canadian. Somehow it's a US action film....

  7. Brian says:

Hopefully Ben Affleck will right the wrong he made in Argo and FINALLY refer to Jimmy Carter as "History's Greatest Monster"

  8. Question for you guys. I was looking through the Independent Spirit Awards. Was there a particular reason why De Niro did not get nominated for the Spirit Awards? Or just voters didn't think he was good enough?

  9. Cinemascore says:

Reading along as I'm far far away. You guys are slaying it! Don't let laremy eat too many carbs.....he gets crazy carb brain. Miss you!!

  10. adu says:

"Brad is wearing a nautical themed pashmina afghan?"

Laremy, how about bringing the house down and sharing a picture of that?

Many people I know wanna see what the boss of this site looks like :)

  11. PaulinJapan says:

Nothing like watching the red carpet in Japan. They've sent a Japanese bimbo to ask the questions, only her English is terrible and she's having to repeat everything three times before she can be understood.

  12. Jordan B. says:

In regards to Laremy going incognito as "Larry," my friend always shortens his name from Sameer to "Sam" whenever we get coffee or order food. People never fail to butcher his surprisingly simple name.

  13. There's plenty of Red Carpet banter going on right now, nothing noteworthy. My first major concern for the night is having to look up the spelling of that little kid's name, from Beasts of the Southern Wild, if she wins tonight. Please don't let that happen....I've been practising "Philip Seymour Hoffman" all week.

  14. viralvora says:

I am hoping for the following
Argo, Lee, DDL, Chastain, Waltz, Hathway !

I dont know why y'all hate the red carpets so much ! it is so fun and so awkward with weird hosts!

  15. viralvora says:

Adele looks like she would wash kristin down with a martini ( because chenoworth looks like a onion on a toothpick)

    I love ADELE!

  16. Mikey says:

Seems like a god time to ask... Who you guys got winning for Best Picture in 2014?
The Wolf of Wall Street, Saving Mr. Banks, The Monuments Men, Labor Day, Nebraska, August: Osage County? Personally I'm thinking Foxcatcher....

  17. 1 for 1 so far. Had a feeling Christoph would get it. My personal preference was Phillip Seymour Hoffman, but Christoph was great so I can't complain too much, even though he is really a lead.

  18. Mykael says:

Never underestimate the power of Golden Globe + BAFTA.
Only the second non-SAG nominee to win the Oscar in the history of the SAG awards.
Emmanuelle Riva may become the third

  19. Chris138 says:

I thought De Niro might take it, but I'm really glad Waltz won instead. Him and Philip Seymour Hoffman were the best in the category, in my opinion.

Also, it sucks that Brave won. Such a mediocre film.

  20. viralvora says:

3 for 4 - would it kill the academy to give the winners 30 seconds more and take away the awful "presenting the best pic nominee" . that was awful the guy on stage was asking for money and they cut him off!

  21. NikkiLovesFood says:

happy to see that Django gets some acting recognition, easily could have been DiCaprio or Jackson if they were nominated

  22. DArtagnan says:

Of all the Bond girls of all the movies, they chose the worst.

They probably didn't get Adele to sing after Bassey because it puts the limelight on one nominated song. Kind of unfair to the other nominees.

  23. Jake17 says:

Okay, so I just watched Argo... what a terrible way to end a movie. RAH RAH AMERICA and a bunch of other bullshit. The car chase was way over the top.

  24. With the exception of the tie, it's been a very predictable show so far. *sighs* Really hope something unexpected happens, but I doubt it now that Argo has one Best Editing.

  25. darkknightfan1225 says:

Jennifer Hudson sucked as she always does. She can't sing. All she has ever done is scream. Adele...YES!

    • viralvora says:

Isnt she always? thats how i remember her... I cant help but be reminded of Emile Sande and the song from London Olympics... that would be a wonderful in-memorium moment

  26. Mykael says:

Beasts of the Southern Wild and Silver Linings Playbook are now the only two Best Picture nominees remaining to have yet to win an award.

  27. Mykael says:

    Tallies so far:
    3 wins
    Les Misérables
    2 wins
    Life of Pi
    Lincoln
    1 win
    Amour
    Anna Karenina
    Argo
    Brave
    Django Unchained
    Skyfall
    Zero Dark Thirty

  28. Chris138 says:

God, I feel like if it weren't for Les Miserables coming out this year then we wouldn't be having to sit through all of this musical nonsense. I don't remember hearing this much singing at the Oscars in all my years of watching.

  29. Newbourne says:

I don't know why no one is talking about this, but it's the FIRST time since 1980 that the nominees for Original Song are all first-time nominees. First time in 33 years! I think that's a big deal.

  30. Mykael says:

    Tallies so far :

    3 wins -
    Les Misérables
    Life of Pi

    2 wins
    Skyfall

    1 win
    Amour
    Anna Karenina
    Argo
    Brave
    Django Unchained
    Lincoln
    Skyfall
    Zero Dark Thirty

    Considerable spread of wealth.

  31. viralvora says:

i am feeling really good about Ang Lee now - and Jessica Chastain - Weinstein and Spielberg magic is fast fading

  32. Mykael says:

    It's the revenge for Tarantino.
Boal should have won for Zero Dark Thirty.
Tarantino shouid have had Oscar for Inglorious Bastards.
    Academy has it's won way.
    Apparently, Haneke isn't Hazanavicius.

  33. ANG LEE!!!! Glad I took that risk! Very well deserved. Anybody think Life of Pi now has the slighter higher chance of winning picture? Just putting it out there. it might still be Argo.

  34. Xarnis says:

Final score update before the end.

    Xarnis: 99 points
    Thornsy: 98 points
    Kessler: 97 points
    Andrew J.S: 97 points
    Corbin: 96 points
    Mykael: 90 points

  35. Newbourne says:

Daniel Day Lewis is undeserving. There I said it. I can't help but laugh every time I see those clips. Such a caricature. Nothing compared to Denzel, Hugh and Bradley's performances. I haven't seen The Master, but it seems Joaquin was equally as incredible. Day Lewis was the weakest of the bunch.

  36. Mykael says:

    Tallies so far:
    4 wins
    Life of Pi
    3 wins
    Les Misérables
    2 wins
    Argo
    Django Unchained
    Lincoln
    Skyfall
    1 win
    Amour
    Anna Karenina
    Brave
    Silver Linings Playbook
    Zero Dark Thirty
    0 win
    Beasts of the Southern Wild
Will Pi get to 5 or will Argo join Les Mis at 3?

    • Art says:

Yea I haven't seen in recent years best picture winner not take the most Oscars as well. In all fairness it should have gotten four instead of Life of Pi due to the Director snub.

            • Jordan B. says:

Supporting Actor, Director, and Original Screenplay were coin flips -- with-a three sided coin in the case of the first and last categories mentioned there -- and I missed out on all three, sadly. I also missed out on a short, which happens every year (2-for-3 three years running) and found myself surprisingly incorrect for Sound Editing, despite its two winners, and Production Design.

Those first 3 misses -- Supporting Actor, Director, and Original Screenplay -- represent predictions that, had I simply gone with what my gut was telling me instead of other what other forces were shouting -- De Niro was a "heart" play, Spielberg was an "easiest guy to award" play, and Haneke was a "the Academy is old" play -- I'd have gotten right.

The other 3 misses -- Documentary Short, Production Design, and Sound Editing -- were legitimate "damn I can't believe those weren't correct" predictions.

Overall though, I can't complain with the night. Lawrence won for Silver Linings and magically Zero Dark Thirty wasn't completely shut out, the wealth was spread around quite a bit, and McFarlane performed well as host. We even got a few solid speeches thrown in there as well.

Until next year, Oscar, so long.

  37. AS says:

On the whole, I think the show was pretty disappointing (even though Django won 2). The air really went out of my tire when Deakins lost.

  38. Xarnis says:

    Final scores for the game

    1st place: Xarnis - 114 points
    2nd place: Andrew J.S and Thornsy - 112 points
3rd Place: Corbin and Kessler - 111 points
    4th Place: Mykael - 102 points

  39. Chris138 says:

Well, there it is. One of the strangest Oscars I've seen. Needed a lot less musical numbers and more MacFarlane. I feel bad that Riva, considering it's her 86th birthday and she flew all the way from Europe to attend and go home empty handed. Oh well, here's hoping for some great movies ahead in 2013!

  40. shaz says:

No wonder " Argo" won. America, after all needs to contextualize it's problems with Iran before it goes to war with it.

        • Chris says:

Oh my god! Was the Argo win a declaration of WAR???? Come on guys, Argo might have not been the best film of the year but it was intense, directed greatly, well acted, and well crafted film. Yes it was conventional and really Hollywood but lets remember this is Hollywood. They like themselves and like to award themselves. Unlike when the Academy passed over Inception and Social Network for the kings speech and last years Artist, Argo wasn't a huge dismissal of innovation. It wasn't much of a push forward but the only film this year that was really innovative was Zero Dark Thirty. On to next year!!

        • Chris138 says:

If you think about it Lincoln would have been more fitting for Michelle Obama to present the Oscar to, or even Zero Dark Thirty, rather than Argo.
