And 'The Artist' gets yet another bump

Tonight the Screen Actors Guild handed out the 2012 Screen Actors Guild Awards and it was a night that offered very few surprises though there was that one moment that caught me off guard.

To begin, The Help took home all three awards it was expected to win with Viola Davis winning Best Actress, Octavia Spencer winning Best Supporting Actress and the cast winning for Best Ensemble. Looking at these results I think you'd be pretty foolish to bet against Davis or Spencer at the Oscars in February, though I don't think this means anything for the film's Best Picture chances. However, one film's Oscar chances got yet another leg up tonight.

George Clooney was the clear front-runner in the Best Actor category for The Descendants, but he did not take home the award as Jean Dujardin won for The Artist, giving the film its second bump of the weekend after director Michel Hazanavicius won at the Directors Guild last night.

While this obviously gives the film even more support in the Best Picture category, it also begs the question, is Dujardin now the front-runner for the Best Actor Oscar? Many have had him in that slot leading up to this point and I am thinking he may be the one to beat. One thing is for sure, The Artist may be looking at a big night come late February.

Finally, Christopher Plummer took home Best Supporting Actor for Beginners as he marches his way to the Oscars where he will add an Oscar to his mantle next to a SAG award, Golden Globe and Critics Choice Award.

With that said, the night didn't teach us much else. I have listed all the winners in bold red below, including the television winners where all the likely suspects ended up winning. I've also updated my "Oscar Overture" section with the win for The Help under the SAG Awards icon and you can also check out all of tonight's SAG Award winners along with the history of SAG winners right here.

I still had hopes for Meryl Streep to win. Let's face it, Meryl's performance was far better than Viola's, who also did a masterful work. It's just that the Academy always awards the second option because giving the award to Meryl Streep wouldn't be original. Hope someone agrees with me…

No I have to give it to Viola. Streep is overrated and she was in a terrible movie.

Streep overrated? Which of her movies have you seen? Mamma Mia? I don't think anyone can deny what a legendary actress she is. The Iron Lady is fairly bad, but Meryl Streep did more with her eyes in that performance than most of the nominees in the whole movie.

I'm upset that the SAG voters choose the same people every year. Steve Carell and Bryan Cranston could've won. I think The Weinstein Company had something to do with Jean Dujardin winning, just so that "The Artist" wouldn't go home empty-handed. I'm shocked that George Clooney, one of the most famous actors in Hollywood, has never won an individual SAG award.

I'm happy that "The Help" won 3 well-deserved awards.

At the Oscar, there will be 2 winners for best actress, which is Meryl Streep (deserved for her total acting and waaaayyy overdue) and Viola Davis (deserved for being so great in The Help).
    We'll see…

Glad for Jean Dujardin. He will win Oscar. Not so happy about ladies from The Help. What did Spencer do better than Bejo in her performance? What did Davis do better than Streep? They were good but not stand outs

I agree, but you also have to understand that Octavia Spencer, Viola Davis and Laurence Fishburne were the only black nominees last night and they couldn't have them all leave empty-handed. Two out of three is great for African-American representation at the SAGs.

And remember, it's probably even worse at the Oscars where Davis and Spencer are literally the only black nominees among the whole ceremony (unless you count the trio who are nominated for Best Original Song for Rio, who are more hispanic than black).

So yeah, I'll bet Spencer and Davis go 2 for 2 at the Oscars to redeem the fact there are no other black nominees whatsoever.

So they will give Spencer & Davis Oscar just because they're black????? If that is the reason than I'm not watching Oscars anymore (I stopped watching them when they snubbed Jim Caviezel's performance in The Passion of the Christ but have since started to watch again). I think that Mo'nique % Hattie McDaniel very well deserved their Oscars but not Jennifer Hudson & certainly not Octavia Spencer. I'm not saying Spencer wasn't good. She was very good actually but I just don't see anything special in that performance.

Very surprised by both Jessica Lange and Betty White. Jean Dujardin wasn't that surprising.

I predicted George Clooney myself, but I did mention that an actor is most likely to win in their first nomination than in their subsequent ones causing George Clooney's chances to fall and Jean Dujardin's to rise.

Also, too bad Michelle Williams didn't win. She's so darn cute!

Well, for me the only thing that the SAG confirmed was that Meryl Streep is hated by her peers (because of envy). It doesn't fit on a right mind that, even giving the best performance of the year, she left empty handed. No wonder why she only has two oscars (the phrase per se is a little embarrassing) I don't think her peers will stand more appreciation to her, that's why she has not being much more awarded in this decade, her peers (at the very deep) are just jelaous, IT'S SO OBVIOUS!

    • Evengan

Wow, that's the most naive comment I've read so far. She won a Screen Actor for Doubt in 2008, and it was considered an upset. Everyone knows that Meryl Streep did a masterful performance, but they don't snub her because they're "jealous", they don't award her because she doesn't campaign for her roles, even though Harvey Weinstein has tried to convince her in several occasions.

The fact that she losses to lesser performances like Sandra Bullock in ‘The Blind Side’ and Winslet in ‘The Reader’ is the perfect example that the Academy tends to give the Oscar to the second best performance nominated. Campaign is extremely important in a race like this, and God knows how much campaign The Help has had for her actresses.

So before you say "IT'S SO OBVIUS!" at such an ignorant statement, think a little bit about the background that surrounds Meryl's losses. Does she deserve the Oscar? Of course. Will she campaign her ass off to win it? Not in a million years. There's a difference between cinematic legends and those who move heaven and earth for a win.

Whoa whoa whoa… who considered that an upset? She was the frontrunner! Sandra Bullock's other wins were utter jokes and everyone knew it. They gave her the awards because she's likeable, not because she's talented.

I kind of tend to agree with Evengan in a way.

The Sandra Bullock win was an utter joke. I love Bullock but that win was literally a joke. I think even she knew that on some level. But I think clearly Streep's overall body of work mostly speaks to itself. She doesn't need a third Oscar to prove anything and again I don't think she thinks strategically in that way when she picks films to make.

The question is will she win a third Oscar because she truly deserves one for a performance or will she get one in the future again because the Academy will decide at some point they 'have to' because she is so often nominated and keeps losing.

My guess is if she gets another it won't necessarily be because she gives the best work in whatever year it turns out to be – but because they decide (like Scorcese's Best Director win) that they better just get it over with and jump on something that looks like it will do.

Is Viola Davis really the lead actress in the Help. I see her more as supporting.

  9. José

    Oscar to Meryl Streep!

  10. Kevin

I think anyone with delusions that Meryl Streep will win a third Academy Award for The Iron Lady should snap out of it. I finally have. Her previous two nominations were Oscar worthy performances. This one (unlike Doubt and Julie and Julia) has been hailed both publicly and in print as Oscar worthy. There will always be a Kate Winslet, Sandra Bullock or Viola Davis, a deserving actress with a good performance in a $ucce$$ful movie looking for her first win, and the Academy LOVES to bestow that honor in these situations. I think the Academy's mindset in Steep's case, the nomination is her reward. I truly believe her third Oscar will be an honorary one, for her body of work, and for her record setting nominations.
