'Bridesmaids' and 'Dragon Tattoo' Make Nominee List for the 2012 Producers Guild Awards
The race gets a new jolt of energy
The Producers Guild of America (PGA) announced their 2011 nominees this morning and I can't say I'm entirely surprised by the films nominated as seven of them are among my top contenders to be nominated for Best Picture — The Artist, The Descendants, The Help, Hugo, Midnight in Paris, Moneyball and War Horse — but a couple of unlikely contenders have found their way into the mix as well.
First off, I have David Fincher's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo ranked #13 on my Best Picture preditions, but a nomination from the PGA definitely gives it a bump, but more importantly is the inclusion of the Universal comedy, Bridesmaids, which has definitely made a move as of late with Universal making a big push for the feature and perhaps it's high time I added it to my list of potential Best Picture nominees.
The Ides of March is another title nominated by the PGA that I don't currently have among my top eight films, but I do have it ranked in the #10 slot.
Notable omissions include The Tree of Life and Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, these nominations essentially end up serving as the one more nail in the coffin of Extremely Loud as that is one film that would have definitely benefit from PGA support, though it seems Scott Rudin found support for his other film, Dragon Tattoo.
As far as these nominees matching up with Oscar's Best Picture nominees, it's not exactly a perfect match though last year the only difference was The Town received a PGA nomination while Winter's Bone took the tenth and final spot at the Oscars. The year before that Invictus and Star Trek were nominated for PGA Awards only to watch A Serious Man and The Blind Side receive Oscar nominations. And the year before that The Dark Knight received the PGA nom while The Reader took the fifth and final spot at the Oscars.
So while these are definitely a major help when attempting to predict this year's Oscar crop, I'm not going to be placing Bridesmaids among my list of nominees yet, though I clearly need to add it to the list. Additionally, with the Academy not offering up a guaranteed ten nominees this year, that also helps cut the field down a bit as Extremely Loud is the only film among my top eight not to be nominated.
I have included all of the nominees for film, television and web series directly below. Have a look and chime in in the comments. Do you see Bridesmaids getting a Best Picture nom? How about Dragon Tattoo?

I think the best pic noms are in there, but no bridesmaids, ides of march, or the girl with the dragon tattoo
I get the sense that WB's strategy (if they had one) for Loud is pretty much not at all gone to plan. I don't think the Academy will look at it any more closely at this point.
At this point I would not be surprised if Bridesmaids crept in as this years 'populist' token entry as it seems to have more appeal. I still haven't seen the film, though.
Dragon – maybe, but the Academy spent the last couple of years giving Fincher some attention already without him winning and I don't see him winning in any big way here. I think Ides may also fall out. I think Oscar is going to support Clooney when it comes to The Descendants instead.
With an additional SAG nom, I think Bridesmaids is a safe bet. Dragon Tattoo? in a year of ten, maybe, but with guild support it could help Mara's outside chances.
Here's my seven picks
Artist
Bridesmaids
Descendants
The Help
Midnight in Paris
Moneyball
War Horse
Hugo as the alternate
Bridesmaids will not get any Oscar shine. It's just a standard summer comedy (IMO) and doesn't deserve all this praise. I guess people are trying to find alternatives for Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, as it appears that it has floundered with critics.
Comedy deserves its due, but not from Bridesmaids. 50/50 should be nominated.
I really liked Bridesmaids and it was definitely the funniest movie of the year and it is amazing it's getting some Oscar praise! I hope it makes it in the list! Universal is doing a great Oscar buzz campaign!
Meet the Parents was a funny film. The 40-Year Old Virgin was a funny movie. But with that said, because they were funny is why they deserve to be nominated? No. The Academy should stick with the films that are actual Oscar-worthy. Bridesmaids isn't one of those films.
Why isn't it Oscar-worthy? Why is it a female geared comedy with gross-out roots worthy of awards? There is more nuance going on with Bridesmaids than there was with 40 year old virgin.
The point i'm making is this whole "push" it's getting is merely a shadow-cast to fill the void Extremely Loud left. And don't try to twist this and say i'm being sexist. I genuinely hated this movie, but for other reasons than "it's a female rom-com".
Well I have not seen those movie I found Bridesmaids a one-of-a-kind comedy! I mean it's already getting some praise for best Original Screenplay so why not for Best Picture? It got fresh reviews and that's what the Academy also likes ;-)
This Bridesmaids love is baffling me. The Academy has never been kind to comedy, but all of a sudden a raunchy comedy about women comes along and they're all over it. The fact that this film could get recognized when the vastly superior and funnier The Hangover (I'm talking the first one) didn't, or even the excellent comedy/drama 50/50, is just insulting. The worst part of it all is this probably means Melissa McCarthy is getting a Supporting Actress nomination…and she'll probably take it from Shailene Woodley, who would be my personal pick to win in that category.
