2012 Golden Globe Predictions: Best Picture (Musical/Comedy)
I've got 14 contenders with eight I see with legitimate shots
I never do a Golden Globe prediction article in advance of the nominations only in advance of the actual awards. But this weekend I started wondering, as Universal sent over a screener for Tower Heist, as I will be doing my own nominations for the Broadcast Film Critics' Critics Choice Awards in the coming weeks, but more on that in the brief future.
So as I set out to take a look at potential nominees at the 2012 Golden Globes I figured I'd begin with what I see as the most interesting category, Best Picture (Musical/Comedy). Personally, I think it's still a little archaic to combine these two genres, leaving the other half of the Best Picture equation to dramas, but it is what it is and we must deal with it.
With that said and some help from Pete Hammond at Deadline as far as which films are competing, these are what I believe to be the contenders for the five nominations in the Best Picture (Musical/Comedy) category this year:
- 50/50
- The Artist
- Beginners
- Bridesmaids
- Carnage
- Crazy, Stupid, Love
- Footloose
- The Guard
- Larry Crowne
- Midnight in Paris
- My Week with Marilyn
- The Muppets
- Win Win
- Young Adult
According to Hammond, Dreamworks tried to wedge The Help into the category but the HFPA vetoed that attempt and other films such as The Descendants and Moneyball were considered, but Fox Searchlight and Columbia decided to go for the Drama category with both respectively.
Looking at the list I think you have three instant locks in Bridesmaids, Midnight in Paris and The Artist, which, for me, leaves two more slots to fill.
After the Gotham Awards last night and the Independent Spirit Awards nominations this morning, it's pretty easy to look at Beginners as one of the final two, leaving me to decide between 50/50, My Week with Marilyn, The Muppets and Young Adult for that final slot.
I'll be seeing Young Adult tomorrow night so it's a little harder to add it to the list right now. Personally I think My Week with Marilyn is more likely to perform in the acting categories where Michelle Williams is guaranteed a Best Actress (Musical/Comedy) nomination as is Charlize Theron for Young Adult. So at this point I think I will have to go with The Muppets, though 50/50 is just as hard to leave off as the other three.
That said, here are my current predictions for the Best Picture (Musical/Comedy) category with #1 being my predicted winner. And this year I'll do a full list of predictions for the 2012 Golden Globe nominations are announced on Thursday, December 15th.
- The Artist
- Midnight in Paris
- Bridesmaids
- Beginners
- The Muppets
- Young Adult
- My Week with Marilyn
- 50/50
- Win Win
- Carnage
- The Guard
- Crazy, Stupid, Love
- Footloose
- Larry Crowne

Given the Globe's reputation I'd suspect they will somehow shoe horn Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides or Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows into the race.
How cute, you think Bridesmaids will get nominated.
"The Hangover" was nominated two years ago and won. "Bridesmaids" definitely has a lock for a nomination.
Unfortunately, Jake is correct.
Jake is correct and it deserves the nom.
Maybe unless they somehow get Pirates of the Caribbean 4 into therunning.
Let's not forget that The Tourist, R.E.D and Alice in Wonderland got nominated here despite the fact that they were advertised as a romantic thriller, oldies actioner and fantasy epic respectively.
Fred is right, Bridesmaids has to be the worst comedy ever made. It's so bland, unfunny and pestilence i walked out.
I heard Sony Picture Classics are screening 'The Guard' – if not for picture, it might be a play for Brendan Gleeson.
Very good note, not sure how I forgot to include it on the list of possibles, especially considering I have a copy right here and really liked that movie. Thanks!
This is my favorite comedy of the year by far, but I understand the style of humor has never been popular here in the US.
So The Descendants is definitely running as a Drama? I know Sideways won the Globe for Comedy. Seems like an odd thing to have happen. Also, Marilyn is competing as a Musical/Comedy? It was technically neither, no?
Agreed on Marilyn, but it's a bit of a screwy category.
That's totally screwy. Marilyn isn't a comedy on this planet.
50/50 should win.
No Win Win? I think it has a shot. Is The Artist really a comedy?
You are absolutely right and I thought the same thing when I mentioned it on the podcast we just did. I've added it to the list.
1. The Artist
2. Beginners
3. Carnage
4. Midnight in Paris
5. Young Adult
This catagory has snubbed Judd Apatow and kids films for much less quality films over the last few years, so I can't see Bridesmaids or The Muppets making it.
A very great year of Comedy films, compare to how weak last year was.
My prediction would be:
1. The Artist
2. Young Adult
3. Midnight in Paris
4. Bridesmaids
5. The Muppets
Hope 50/50 or Win Win can sneak in, too
How about We Bought a Zoo? I think it might have a shot.
Bridesmaids should win, hands down. Easily the funniest movie of the year and one of the funniest movies i've seen. But i think The Artist will take it. Crazy, Stupid, Love was very good though same with 50/50.
carnage.
What happened to the film BUTTER? Is it not coming out this year?
1. The Artist
2. Midnight in Paris
3. Bridesmaids
4. Beginners
5. Young Adult
If this was based on the best films I'd go for:
1.The Artist
2.Young Adult
3.Bridesmaids
4.Crazy Stupid Love
5.50/50
However, these are the Golden Globes which are incredibly unpredictable. Like others said I really wouldn't be surprised if Pirates 4 is nominated or even Transformers (it was more of a comedy than The Artist!). As for Sherlock 2, I'm not sure when the GG nominations are announced and I think the premiere is next Thursday which may be too late.
The previous Sherlock Holmes came out on Christmas Day but that didn't prevent Downey Jr winning. Given that the sequel comes out before Christmas I wouldn't bet against Sherlock Holmes 2.
Given the HFPA's love affair with Johhny Depp it's Pirates 4's to lose.
0I will be rather peeved if The muppets and/or Bridesmaids and/or Crazy stupid Love (not very good and boring) are nominated but Win/Win is shut out…Great movie from earlier in the year. Hope it can be remembered. Also it had by far the best original song from this years crop of films.
Seems like they usually try to squeeze in a musical every year, so I have a pretty good feeling Muppets will get a nom.
