2010 Screen Actors Guild Awards Live Blog: Live Winners and Commentary
It's the actors turn to voice their opinion
And we're back again less than a week after the Golden Globes brought us confirmation Avatar is not only a box-office juggernaut, but also a potential awards show king. However, tonight won't be Avatar's night as it is not among the nominees at the 2010 Screen Actors Guild Awards, which means any number of other films can see their stock rise as the actors weigh in with their opinion when it comes to the best of the year. I will be here all night long starting around 4:30 PM PST with up-to-the-minute commentary and winners just like I was for the Golden Globes (read that here) and will do for the Oscars in March. But tonight is about the SAGs so before we get to the commentary there are a few things to preview.
First off, on Wednesday I asked you to predict who would win at this year's event and I held my personal predictions for the show until today, but it looks like we are pretty much of the same mind except for one award. Here's how things shook out with the polling compared to my personal predictions for tonight.
| YOUR PREDICTIONS | MY PREDICTIONS |
Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role
Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role
Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role
Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role
Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture

Is it possible things can be this predictable? If you're wondering why I went with Precious for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture, it's simply a matter of opinion, but it was not an easy pick considering the nomination of Diane Kruger is a pretty big sign Inglourious Basterds could take it home. However, along those same lines it would be just as easy to consider Up In the Air a likely winner seeing how George Clooney, Anna Kendrick and Vera Farmiga were all three nominated and pretty much make up that film's complete ensemble… too bad it's not nominated.
My prediction for runner-up is Inglourious Basterds, but you guys predicted The Hurt Locker, which means it looks like Best Ensemble will be the most interesting moment of the night barring an upset in one of the earlier categories.
Without any additional fluff, let's get started. The 16th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards begin at 8 p.m. (ET/PT), 7 p.m. (CT) and 6 p.m. (MT) and I will begin live-blogging around 4:30 PST with up-to-the-minute winners and commentary. Also, like the Globes, winners will also show up on my Twitter page as they are announced as well. The show will be simulcast live on TNT and TBS from the Los Angeles Shrine Exposition Center and if you're not doing anything right now, Titanic is showing in HD on TNT right now.
I hope you enjoy, and just like the Globes I will add a page break at the top of each hour, but this show is only two hours long so it's not as much of a haul as the Globes or the Oscars will be.
4:12:43 PM: One award I'm not sure will be handed out on air is that for Film and Television Stunt Ensemble, but a press release was just sent out announcing the stunt performers and coordinators from Star Trek and "24" as this year's winners.
4:30:08 PM: And here we go sports fans, the red carpet show has started and I can't wait for this 30 minutes to end.
4:30:37 PM: And I mean it when I say "sports fans" as unlike the Globes we don't have to compete with the NFL playoffs today. Whew!
4:31:07 PM: By the way, if any of you are on Twitter and want to get the winners over there I will be adding winners on there as well, just follow me here.
4:32:02 PM: And the first celebrity is Kyra Sedgwick, not exactly bringing down the house, but it is a TNT show she's there for so no big surprise.
4:33:02 PM: Now we move to Justin Timberlake, really sticking to the "actors" vibe here eh? I kid, I like Timberlake, but he's hardly the first person you think of when you think about actors.
4:33:52 PM: Sedgwick to Timberlake to Meryl Streep… okay, upping the ante now.
4:34:36 PM: Streep has got to be tired of talking about Julie and Julia by now though.
4:35:03 PM: Speaking of Meryl, will she be upset by Sandra Bullock and if so doesn't Bullock have to become the front-runner at the Oscars?
4:35:50 PM: Okay, whoever this guy is TNT has on the red carpet is a bit on the clueless side.
4:36:30 PM: Hmmm, Kate Hudson has a little backless number on… works for me.
4:39:31 PM: Commercial over, back to the show and the "Glee" cast is here, which makes sense because I don't recognize any of them although the TNT interviewer tells me I should. Guess that's what happens when you don't watch "Glee."
4:40:51 PM: Here's a shot of Marion Cotillard on the red carpet.
4:41:50 PM: Okay, the TNT female announcer's name is Thea. Got that figured out. She's talking to Morgan Freeman…. Only 17 minutes left before the show starts.
4:42:43 PM: Peter is the guy's name. He's talking to Steve Carell. Peter sort of scares me.
4:44:15 PM: Here's a shot of Drew Barrymore on the red carpet.
4:45:15 PM: Okay, the server is starting to get hit a bit hard, should it continue I may have to disable comments again. Just a warning, going to try to keep the server from crashing like it did for 26 minutes during the Globes.
4:47:36 PM: Peter's talking to Betty White who will be receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award tonight.
4:48:18 PM: Peter just stumbled a bit, just asked Betty White, "What was it like doing Th… The… The… your last film?" It's called The Proposal Peter, and guess what… she enjoyed doing it. However we learn Sandra Bullock will be presenting the award to Betty tonight.
4:50:12 PM: Gabourey Sidibe is on the interview podium… Will Precious prove me right and take the ensemble award or will the readers be right and Inglourious Basterds take it? I have a feeling those readers have me beat.
4:51:21 PM: Oh Lord, a "fashion" montage set to old school techno beats. Doo doo doo… beep beep.
4:52:27 PM: Fashion conversation now, really not my thing. TNT appears to be tempting me turn the channel to ESPN.
4:54:11 PM: Teaser: They will be talking to one of the biggest stars in the world and she was in Nine… gotta be Kidman right, but is she still a "big" star or just a "big" name?
4:57:13 PM: Three minutes left as we listen to Bullock talk about turning down The Blind Side and coming back to it again. Yup, haven't heard this story yet.
4:59:07 PM: Okay, one minute to go so I'm dropping a page break… let's move to page two.

Quick question Brad, are your predictions the ones that your head says or your heart? (Sounded a little more sentimental than I planned but hopefully, you get the point.)
@Eric: Head (with a smidge o' heart), I just think the performances of Sidibe, Mo'Nique, Patton and Carey will sway the Guild a bit more. The Kruger nom is the only thing that scares me into thinking I'm wrong. At least we have something to look forward to.
@Brad Brevet: Ah, I see. That's where my predictions are flawed, more heart than head in my thinking. Plus, I also think that the mass DVD push of Precious (and An Education, Up in the Air, and Inglorious Basterds) onto the guild will heavily tip the scales in their favor. Some more than others. The Kurger nod is strange, but I don't think it has any major significance.
@Brad Brevet: BTW, UP IN THE AIR is not up for ensemble.
I'll go on record and say that Inglorious Basterds will win Best Ensemble.
Well, my picks line up completely with the readers' picks (My heart wants Mulligan to win, but my head knows that won't happen). Is it just me, or are the four acting categories pretty much set in stone. I'm thinking that if these four win tonight, they each have the Oscar wrapped up.
And Inglourious Basterds was barely above The Hurt Locker as my favorite movie of the year, so I hope it wins Best Ensemble. However, if a Best Ensemble win for The Hurt Locker would help its stock rise, and help it get the Oscar over Avatar, I'd be happy to see it take home the award.
Unfortunately, since the show isn't live like the Globes, I can't follow you blog live Brad. I'll have to come back after the show to read your commentary.
@m1: Ha, looks like an earlier draft was published leaving out my "too bad it's not nominated" line… Sheesh, I need to look a little closer before hitting that publish button. Thanks!
I'm still not sure why Up in the Air wasn't nominated for Ensemble.
Anyways, here are my predictions: Bridges, Streep, Waltz, Mo'Nique, Precious.
Adding on to Brad's comments, another thing that I think Precious has going for it is the fact that it was driven by its performances. Inglourious Basterds is a film that looks great, the script is remarkable, and Tarantino's direction is flawless. The acting is great as well, but it's not a highlight. On the other hand, if you take away the performances in Precious, you lose a lot of the film's power. The cast is the foundation.
what channel do we watch on? or what broadcast, tnt? nbc??
@americanrequiem: TNT
thanks brad, is there a live stream for the awards show?
@americanrequiem: Nope, just on TV, although the red carpet is being streamed on TNT.tv.
TBS is also broadcasting it, I believe.
Glee…?
I don't understand this show receiving a SAG award, certainly not compared to "The Office" and "30 Rock"… "Glee" is too predictable, and therefore, not funny!!! It is a teenage drama ("Dawson's Creek" … "the musical"), not a comedy.
My mom watches "The Good Wife" but I think it has more to do with her being an avid fan of ER than it does this new show. Who knows? I haven't watched a regularly syndicated show since the X-Files.
Oh god. It's cant't be real. Tina Fey and Baldwin again? Collette and Shalhouab was much better.
I love The Good Wife. It's done very well in the ratings-mostly women watch it maybe. It's very topical-a politician cheated on his wife.
TALK "Mad Men" !!!
No, the end of Damages was not nearly as bad as the beginning. The season wasn't great, but it did build power.
I liked the first season of Damages better than the second but I still really liked the second season. Can't wait for the third.
And CANNOT WAIT for True Blood either.
And I really want Carey Mulligan to win! I loved An Education. :)
Ooohhh….I like the live blogging….rooting for Bullock & Bridges & Bigelow
Tough competition, but Carey Mulligan was terrific in "An Education."
Bullock will win????
I hope Meryl gonna win. And i hope Farmiga!
Yeah and so were Sidibe & Streep….looking forward to the result…I hope Bridges or Firth win for Best Actor and I consider Tina Fey a suprsie actually!!
Streep for Actress, and Precious for Ensemble I reckon. I hope Bridges wins, he's one of my favorite actors, alongside Downey Jr
I'm calling an upset win for either Carey Mulligan or Gabby Sidibe…and Clooney winning too…and I'm going with Hurt Locker for the ensemble…
I'm watching the Betty White – Life Achievement Awards on YouTube, and yes it's getting restless….Bullock was funny though.
Why does it say Jeff Bridges for Best Actor in a Supporting Role ????
DANG IT…wished Mulligan or Sidibe would have gotten it…Bullock was average in the movie.
BULLOCK WON!
@Jonathan: Glee is amazing. It's highly addictive. It's something that hasn't been done before and even though it is targeted towards a teenage audience, the acting is solid and it's quite difficult to do all that they do each episode. It all just works out in the end and makes you happy. And it's not only a "Drama". It's part Drama, Comedy and Musical
I absolutely love 30 Rock and believe that it is one of the funniest shows out there but I am not disappointed that Glee won. :)
YEAHHH!!!!!!!!! Bullock…Do actors pick the Winners ?
Hmmm….best ensemble threw me for a loop. I was anticipating Precious. Either way, I still think the Oscar race is still between Avatar and The Hurt Locker. I think that Inglorious Bastreds is still a dark horse.
Why oh why!?!?!?!?! Where is this whole Sandra Bullock thing coming from. Carey Mulligan deserves recognition for her work in An Education and its a shame that she's not getting it. Its just sad.
I only watched the first four or five episodes of The Good Wife (just didn't have the time), but it was really good. Julianna Margulies absolutely deserves the awards for a very courageous performance, and the show as a whole is intelligent and enjoyable.
On a side note, what a shame that Sidibe didn't upset the front-runners for Best Actress.
yay for Tina and Alec!Gosh I hate Glee…
@Shaikh Ahmed: @Shaikh Ahmed: Well, you seem to have an addiction to a show that is based on events in the pre-teen to teen age group, which could be perceived as sad because we are seeing teenagers as pregnant. Shouldn't teens be striving to meet their dreams and ambitions???? We (my wife and I) are supportive of the arts, being dancers ourselves. We know how hard it is to act, dance, and put on a show. However, the "addiction" you are speaking of was hard for us to get into. Where is the humor and mystery in the show? It is not well written in the fact that we want to see more of the show.
I beliebe Mulligan will shine at the BAFTa's, and she'll take home the trophy because there's no Bullock and only Streep and Sidibe that could get in the way with possibly Streep doing the most damage…and the awards season is far from over, We haven't even got the Oscar Noms yet so nothing is certain..but all will be reveiled soon!
@blerg: My wife and I too! Were is the reality?
@Bradley Badder: Yeah, the guild–which consists of only actors, hence the name–nominates and votes for the winners.
@Jonathan: maybe it'll get more real when Jlo guest stars… lol ;)
I would much rather seen Bullock win than Streep in this ridiculously weak year for lead actresses. I love Streep just as much as anyone else, but I just thought her performance was nothing special. I do realize I'm alone in this, though.
Pretty much any of the nominees that lost to Winslet last year would have won this year… especially Hathaway,Jolie, and Streep in "Doubt."
Sandra Bullock deserve this award!
Best moment of the night was Sandra winning Best Actress. Her speech, as always, was adorable. I like how she seemed genuinely moved while mentioning her husband.
