2010 Oscar Candidates Already?
What? Say what?
The Oscars are still fresh in our memories, but no matter how you cut it they are over and it it is time to move forward as we have a whole new year of films to embark on.
Of course, we are heading into the summer months very soon and they aren't exactly prime for Oscar pickin's so we will have to wait a while for a few of these to come out, but I have put together a list of ten films I am going to be keeping my eye on for Oscar's big prize in 2010. Have any you caare to add to the list?
- Biutiful (Alejandro González Iñárritu with Javier Bardem)
- The Lovely Bones (I heard a small bit of good buzz on Peter Jackson's next recently)
- Broken Embraces (Penelope Cruz won last night and now she's back with Pedro Almodvar)
- Nine (Rob Marshall's new musical with a fleet of talent along for the ride)
- Adam (Max Mayer's dramedy is already stirring some buzz)
- The Ghost (Roman Polanski won't enter the U.S. but his films will)
- A Serious Man (The Coen brothers directing a bunch of unknowns. Perfect!)
- Up In the Air (Jason Reitman has George Clooney along for his next)
- Whatever Works (Woody Allen and Larry David together just sounds sooooooo right)
- The Tree of Life (Terrence Malick with Sean Penn and Brad Pitt)
It's not a scientific list by any means, just a little bit of fun speculation and below are ten more films that could potentially make some waves.
- Julie & Julia (Meryl Streep is in it, can't ignore it)
- Agora (Alejandro Amenabar with Rachel Weisz)
- Brothers (Jim Sheridan directs Natalie Portman and Jake Gyllenhaal)
- Edge of Darkness (My Departed-style film pick)
- The Informant (Steven Soderbergh with Matt Damon)
- Amelia (A biopic about Amelia Earhart with Hilary Swank just says "Oscar" to me)
- Cheri (Michelle Pfeiffer is already getting early buzz)
- An Education (Early festival buzz, but sounds like an actor's piece)
- Shutter Island (Martin Scorsese's latest, but based on the book it's going to be a close one)
- The Men Who Stare at Goats (Another Clooney feature with Good Night, and Good Luck scripter Grant Heslov at the helm)
We also can't forget about Paul Greengrass with Matt Damon in Green Zone and Michael Mann's Public Enemies with Depp and Bale, but both of those are dealing with summer release dates. I considered adding Fame to one of the two lists, but will it be a successful musical or crash and burn like Rent did? I worry Terry Gilliam's The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus will have the sentiment but still be a bit too "out there" for the Academy. Kathryn Bigelow's The Hurt Locker seems lost at Summit. Mammoth got some bad reviews out of Berlin. It looks like Steven Spielberg probably won't be making Lincoln this year. I can't put a finger on how good The Young Victoria will be and Sin Nombre is coming out too early to be considered a contender just yet, even though I really want to see that film, and Sugar appears to be in the same boat. Oh, and at this point I have pretty much given up on The Road — maybe there is an Oscar there, maybe not, but I am just hoping I get a chance to see it before the Weinstein's lock it away forever. I also think The Soloist is now doomed for award consideration after having its release date moved.
So what did I forget? I am sure you have some ideas, fire away.

the soloist looks good.. sherlock holmes.. avatar looks like a good sci-fi flick but i guess its still long shot for the oscars right now.. its just that it's been a while since sci-fi movies were recognized at the oscars.. also " Up " from pixar.. u can never go wrong with pixar as jack black mention yesterday..
@sam: Oh man, I absolutely overlooked Up… good catch! As for a film such as Avatar, it would be nice to see sci-fi get back in there and if there was a film that could potentially do it it seems like this may be the one.
mentioned*
Dorian Gray looks intresting.. robbin hood or whatever its called..
i have a feeling public enemies is going to be huge come oscars next year… and meryl will ahve her 16th nomination for sure.
and you can bet on Marty racking up a few for his shutter island
also emily blunt has been getting major oscar buzz…
but i think 2010 will be Hillary Swank as Amelia Earheart in Mira Niar's Amelia… i think she will take home her third oscar… i think only katherine hepburn has more wins
Up…. C'mon!It's Pixar!
Avatar… James Cameron+12years in the making+Titanic+groundbreaking=Oscars!
Please, can we just lay to rest the whole Oscar notion for a while? For two months it seems, this site has been dedicated to updating all on everything Oscar related. And maybe it was wanted, but now that they're over, can we just have a week before we start predicting next year's winners?
@Roger
yeah well as brad and i said though, its a sci-fi movie.. they're not as recognized as one would certainly hope, weather it'll get real oscar buzz or not is still up in the air right now, cuz lets face, from the sound of it, it looks more like a blockbuster movie à la minority report, terminator 2 or such movies.. and despite of those movies being quite good, both hadn't been nominated for best picture, only in the more technical categories.. also the only thing that kinda makes avatar scented with oscar hot-air is the fact that its coming out on a season we all know the oscars adore; dec. 19th.. so Im guessing whoever chose that date was either forced or he has a feeling it has shot.. i'll be more than happy if it does, provided the movie's really going to be mesmerizing.. remember we haven't seen it yet.. lets just hope it all goes accordingly.
500 Days of Summer looks to me like it could be Little Miss Sunshine or Juno this year.
Also, Parnassus and Public Enemies look like they are positioning themselves to be snubbed. And write it down now Mr. Scorsese is directing Dicaprio, Marty gets a nomination at least. and Up! is going to win Best Animated feature AT LEAST.
Sleeper pick for best picture – The Road.
I'm pretty sure that Shutter Island, Nine and The Lovely Bones will be nominated for Best Picture.
And I think Coraline, Up and 9 are sure bets in the Best Animated Feature category. And if not 9, then The Princess and the Frog.
Also, looks like Day-Lewis and Depp will be against each other again…
You can't count a film out just because it doesn't come out during the fall/winter. The Silence of the Lambs came out a year before the awards. The Soloist in my opinion still has a shot at next years awards. Inglorious Basterds is a film I think has some potential to do good at the awards, its a WW2 film through the eyes of Tarantino. I think it could be a contender. Funny People could be Judd Apatow's Annie Hall. Woody Allen hit it big with the awards with Hall, and since Funny People is taking a more serious route, Apatow could finally be getting the recognition he deserves.
The Limits of Control and Antichrist could be contenders from two long overdue directors.
Here are some of my early predictons.
Best Picture
-Inglorous Basterds
-The Lonely Bones
-Public Enemies
-The Road
-Sherlock Holmes
I would have put Ang Lee's Taking Woodstock on the list and I think there is a movie about Charles Darwin and his wife coming out starring Paul Bettany and Jennifer Connelly.
@joker47: I'm not "counting a film out", I am just being realistic and Apatow's Funny People has pretty much zero chance.
@Violet: Good call on Taking Woodstock forgot all about that one.
Up, Coraline, and Miyazaki's new film (Ponyo by a cliff was it?) are locks for animated feature. If Up is anywhere near as good as Wall-E and dare I say even surpasses it given Pixar's track record for following one masterpiece after another, Pixar might finally break through this time into the best picture race (The Academy already made good on their IOU to Winslet, I'm certain they will make good for Pixar too eventually).
Public Enemies, Amelia, and the Soloist all look good too
@USC film 04: I think the Academy has an unwritten rule stating Only one IOU/lifetime achievement awards per year. Kate Winslet got it this year. Who knows whose turn it will be next year, because that line is long. You potentially have Depp and Dicaprio finally getting theirs, Pixar finally getting a best picture nomination, and others.
"Push" took home the top prize at Sundance. It'll be interesting to see if it can ride that good buzz all the way to the Oscars like "Frozen River " did.
i do hope Sarah Michelle Gellar gets her first nod for her portrayal as Veronika in the upcoming Veronika Decides to Dies. Everybody over looked her. She has been amazing in all the movies she had done (some might be a huge flop) but nonetheless, her last performance in The Air I Breathe is quilvelant to of Jennifer Connelly or Hilary Swank maybe infact better than Reese Witherspoon. However, she's snubbed and I do hope the Oscar will consider her.
Don't forget that Clint Eastwood has a movie about Nelson Mandela coming out starring Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon.
I know this is pretty much impossible but do you think fanboys will push Watchmen the way they did TDK?
Also its hard for me to even predict right now because this time last year I had never even heard of Slumdog Millionare haha.
I swear to god if Meryl Streep doesn't finally get her third oscar next year. Jwkdlalajdk. It's very good that Kate won over anyone else. If Meryl was going to lose to anyone I'm glad it was her.
@chewbaca69: No to Watchmen.
@Violet: Yes, another one I forgot and definitely one to consider.
The Oscar-bait for 2010 should go something like this:
1. Amelia (Best Actress – Hillary Swank, Best Picture)
2. The Lovely Bones (Best Picture, Director)
3. Shutter Island (Best Picture, Best Director – Martin Scorsese)
4. Julie & Julia (Best Actress – Meryll Streep)
I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that Johnny Depp receives a nomination for Best Actor for Public Enemies.
Having read the book and script for Shutter Island, it should be a contender across the board, with it's best chance being for DiCaprio (it's a great actor's piece, honestly one of the juciest characters I've ever read).
And Meryl Streep goes for her 16th Oscar bid for Julie and Julia! Geesh, hopefully, the Academy will give it to her already!
Watchmen nominated for everything The Dark Knight was nominated for adding orginal score and best song, best director Zack Synder. Zack has only made three films in his career, but in my opition they were all masterful. He started with the 2004 Dawn Of The Dead remake and blew me away. One of the best zombie films and remakes of all time. A rollercoaster bloodbath, fun, scary as hell and all the SE's done all old school, with only one use of c.g.i. then we got the stunning 300 one of the most retro and visonary war films of all time. and finally the the all ready infamous WATCHMEN that is still a week away. so i high hopes that he will be nominated and where nolan fell Zack will rise and win for best director. p.s sorry for all my rammbling and getting off topic. peace
Push based on the Novel Had the biggest buzz out of Sundance. I mean it did win three awards.lol.
All Good Things, Ryan Gosling and Kirsten Dunst.
And your also missing a whole slew of Helen Mirren Movies, The Last Station, The Tempest and The Love Ranch.
Also Howl with James Franco.
1939 sounds pretty baity as well.
"American Violet"
"Owl and the Sparrow"
also…
"Sunshine Cleaning" looks like it could be really good.
Watchmen won't get Snyder nominated, sorry. It will win some tech awards but nothing else.
Everyone, myself included, forgot Spike Jonze Where the Wild Things Are. Best Picture, Director ,screenplay (haven't personally read it but Dave Eggers means GOLD.
And has there ever been a bigger lock for a nomination than Daniel Day Lewis in 'Nine'?
leonardo dicaprio will win the best actor award at the 2010 academy awards, i guarantee you all. this is his year, trust me. martin scorcesse and leo will rack up awards next year doing the awad season, i promise you all tonight. and, when he plays theodore roosevelt, i feel he will win for that also, we'll see. he knows what he has to do now. the final piece to the puzzle is set for him. he should have got it for the aviator and what's eating gilbert grape as arnie, and he should have won for blood diamond imo also, but nonetheless, 2010 is the year for Leonardo Dicaprio, bet all your money on him now folks.
so here's a complied list of those oscar potential movies not mentioned in the original article :
1- The Human Factor " December " ( Clint Eastwood directs the biopic about nelson mandela, morgan freeman and matt demon star )
2- Up " May 29 " ( Well, its Pixar. Nuff said. )
3- Dorian Gray " Sep. 11 UK date " ( I personally love Rebecca Hall and this story seems very interesting )
4- The Soloist " April 24 " ( Despite being delayed a few times, i still have high hopes for this one )
5- Sherlock Holmes " Nov. 13 " ( I have a gut feeling that this movie will turn out really good )
6- Taking Woodstock " Aug. 15 " ( Ang Lee is back in business and he's looking for some laughs, we'll see if he gets 'em come august )
7- Avatar " Dec. 18 " ( Right now, it looks more of a blockbuster movie then anything despite its release date. I still think it's worth mentioning cuz oscars might wanna start looking into some " un-holocaust " movies and give sci-fi films their chance )
@sam: Love it, keep the recommendations coming as I hope to launch an all new Contenders section in about a month.
One note, the Eastwood movie probably won't be called The Human Factor, that was an early working title that has since been abandoned.
A Serious Man- I think the Coen brothers will win a few awards for this one.
Cheri- Michelle Pfeiffer has a good change at best actress.
Shutter Island- This movie will probably be nominated for quite a few awards..best picture and best leading actor for sure
The tree of life- Sean Penn and Brad Pitt…enough said.
Mandela- I this this movie is going to bring us our Best Leading Actor.
Nine- Daniel Day-Lewis, penelope cruz, nicole kidman, kate hudson…it's going to be a hit or miss
What about Inglorious Basterds… that movie looks really imaginative actually. Why isnt that mentioned?
oh yeah and the last station, i think that james mcavoy will deffinitly get his first and much deserved oscar nomination for it.
how can one forget Angels and Demons???looks good in trailers…
@darkknight89:
Any other things look good coming out of Sundance???????
I heard Rite was reviewed well….
what is the next short or indie out there to become big??????
I am from Suriname, my name is Raoel Doelahasori
Contenders:
-Actriz: -Meryl Streep (Julie & Julia)
-Emily Blunt ( The Young Victoria)
-Hillary Swank (Amelia)
-Nicole Kidman (The Danish Girl)
-Michelle Phiffer (Cheri)
-Keira Knightley (The Edge of Love)
-Penelope Cruz (Broken Embraces)
-Angelina Jolie (Salt)
-Gwen Paltrow (Twp Lovers)
-Rachel Weisz (The Lovely Bones)
-Halle berry (Frankie & Alice)
-Supp.Actriz: -Penelope Cruz (Nine)
-Susan Sarandon (The Lovely Bones)
-Charlize Theron (The Danish Girl)
-
umm Keira Knightley for The Edge of Love? I don't think so, that movie came out in 2008 and TANKED.
i really think "American Violet" will do well. Also, The Road is sure to please, hopefully Viggo's first win.
again, it looks like next year will yet again be another ladies' year
The Danish Girl….
@Raoel Doelahasori: Also to consider are Audrey Tatou for Coco Avant Chanel" (remember how Marion Cotillard won for another French biopic?) and Julie Delpy for "The Countess" (she's overdue for an acting nomination after missing out for both "Before Sunrise" and "Before Sunset", and she's getting huge buzz).
A Serious Man – I have heard that the Coen Bros will make a return to something closer to their earlier, fantastic style with this semi-autobiographical story, full of supposedly great unknown actors. More in the "small film" Fargo vein than recent, star-studded works, it might well be Oscar material if it is as good as some who have read the script say.
Mandela – Morgan Freeman in the title role and Matt damon supporting seem like Academy catnip. With the great Clint Eastwood directing, just seems like its chances of being a towing film (and Oscar bait) are very strong indeed.
All that are great choices, but aren't you forgetting Harry Potter? I know it won't win Best Picture, but it could win Best Graphics!
If Nine is anywhere near as good as Chicago, I'd predict much more nominations than I'm seeing here. Sure, Daniel-Day Lewis and Penelope Cruz seem like the obvious lock-ins, but I wouldn't rule out a Marion Cotillard or Judi Dench nomination. I'd also be sure to predict it for picture and director, possibly winning the latter to reward Marshall for both this and Chicago. Chicago received four acting nominations in a highly competitive year, and launched Catherine Zeta-Jones a win for her first nomination over Meryl Streep, Kathy Bates, and the overdue Julianne Moore. I wouldn't rule out a double nomination for Cruz (Actress for another Almodovar collaboration and supporting actress for the most award-winning role in Nine's Broadway run).
I also think Coraline is a definite nomination for animation, but will almost definitely lose to UP. But based on what I've seen of UP, I doubt the Best Picture nomination for Pixar will happen this year.
It's virtually impossible to predict the actual winner. After all, this time last year, people were positive Revolutionary Road, Changeling and Benjamin Button would be the biggest winners, and look at what they ended up with. Nobody had heard of Slumdog Millionaire until Toronto. Though the Mandela and Earhart biopics, Nine, Shutter Island, Lovely Bones and Whatever Works seem like strong contenders because of their credentials, it's hard to predict how they'll do after a year in which the director of American Beauty and the stars of Titanic collaborated to produce an inferior version of AMC's Mad Men that till this day feels like it hasn't been released yet.
Dont forget Peter Weir!
i must to say, i have to put taking woodstock down if for no other reason than it was filmed in my town =) but i am also looking forward to lovely bones, sherlock holmes, julia and julia and a bunch of others we'll see its still really early to tell, someone else mentioned that slumdog wasnt really on anyone's radar basically until it came out ………..
My name is Raoel Doelahasori i have a new prediction for 2010 oscars,
Best Actriz: Penelope Cruz
Best Actor: Jamie Foxx
Best Supp.Actrice: Nicole Kidman
Best Supp.Actor: James Franco
Now that 1/2 the year is over, I think that Up, Star Trek, and The Hurt Locker are the 3 really big contenders for next year's Oscars. Most movies like Cheri Whatever Works, and Public Enemies are underperforming with the critics, and Soloist has about as much a chance as Next Day Air. Edge of Darkness has been pushed to next Jan. With the extra 5 slots for Best Pic, movies like Up and Trek now may have a shot. Here's my early picks for Best Picture
1.Up (Will get a lot of Wall-e sympathy and Pixar support)
2.Star Trek (Will get a lot of TDK sympathy)
3.The Lovely Bones (Hearing lots of good things)
4.Nine (the musical…just has the right formula of an Oscar contender)
5. Invictus (Will get Gran Torino sympathy and Matt Damon & Morgan Freeman in a movie together is a great thing)
6.Amelia (Def. a nod for Swank, but this bio-pic does look like Oscar bait)
7.Up in the Air (Reitman and Clooney will make a great team)
8. Shutter Island (With the name Martin Scorsesse, Oscar just comes natural, but a supernatural twist could just be what he needs for another nod)
9.A Serious Man (hearing good things…Coen's return to drama could do the trick)
10.The Road (gotta give the trailer some cred, this movie looks to be a sick masterpiece)
I'm guessing for Up to get the Best Pic nod after Wall-e this year, cause I'm guessing Disney will want to push Ponyo (it's Mizaki….def. win) and A Christmas Carol for Best Animated Film movies like 9 and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs could also pull off the nod for Best Animated flick.
Best Actor: Morgan Freeman
Best Supporting Actor: Christian Bale
Best Actress: Hilary Swank
Best Supporting Actress: Sophia Loren
Id say, Best Actor Morgan Freeman, Best Actress Halle Berry, Best Supporting Actor Jamie Foxx and Best supporting Actress Kathy Bates
Morgan freeman will win best actor. Jamie foxx will win best supporting actor. Hilary swank is amazing so I say she will win best actress and best supporting actress will be Marion Collitard
==Best Picture==
Precious
Invictus
The Hurt locker
Nine (WINNER)

==Best Actor==
Johnny Depp, Public Enemies

Monsters vs Aliens
I don't mean to be a jerk but, you guys do know that Daniel Day Lewis is in Nine right? Just curious cause no one had picked him as winning best actor (not nominated in some cases!! a travesty of the highest order!!! LOL)
Animation is STACKED this year, I don't know if that hurts or helps UP's chances of getting the BIG nod…
9, Coraline, Ponyo, The Princess and the Frog and so on and so on (only 3 flicks nominated last year, it's and over crowded room at this point)
More important than anything, since it is really early to be talking about Gold Bald Statues, is that the back end of this year looks FANTASTIC!!!! At the very least 30 movies worth checking out, and maybe upwards of 45-50! It's pretty exciting.
I hope the academy finally gives Morgan Freeman an oscar for Invictus. He is probablythe ost talented living actor in the business. I see Marion Collitard winning best actress, Jamie Foxx winning best supporting actor (who gave one of the greatest performances in The Solist), and Kathy Bates winning best supporting actress for Cheri.
Here are my predictions……
Best Picture… Avatar
Best Director… Clint Eastwood (Nelson mandela picture)
Best Actor… Morgan Freeman (Nelson mandela Pic)
Best Actress… Hilary Swank (Amelia)
Best Supporting Actor… Jamie Foxx (The Solist)
Best Supporting Actress… Sophia Loren
Best Adapted Screenplay… Precious
Best Animation… 9 (Anima film)
Best Orginal Song… Nine
I have a feeling best picture will be the Nine. I think best actor will be between Daniel Day-Lewis and Morgan Freeman. Best actress is Audrey tautou for Coco before chanel. Best supporting actress isMeryl streep for Julie and julia and best supporting actor should be Jamie Foxx. I highly doubt he will have any competition for the award. HAVE YOU GUYS SEEN THE SOLOIST.
I love Hilary Swank. She will win best actress. Morgan Freemin will win best actor for the mandela movie right along with Matt Damon. Best support actress will be penelope cruz for 9.
Morgan freeman will get nominated but he will not win. Daniel Day-Leis will win. the Best actress award will be between Halle Berry for Frankie & Alice and Marion Collitard. I have the bootleg version of The Soloist and Jamie Foxx will most definently win Best supporting Actor. Patricia Clarckson will win best supporting actress for Shutter Island
I highly doubt Meryl will get a nomination without winning this year! The nominees for that category will be Hilary Swank (Amelia), Michelle Pfeiffer (Cheri), Audrey Tautou (Coco Avant Chanel), Meryl Streep (Julie and Julia), and Marion Cotillard (Nine)
Daniel Daylewis for best actor. Maybe, Morgan Freeman might have a better shot at it because its a biopic. But musicals always seem to have a big effect on the oscars so its between them 2.
Jamie Foxx gave one of the best supporting performances in the history of film. If he doesn't win, it would be the worst stolen award in Oscar's history. His performance was just as good if not better than Ray.
I think one of the many actresses who will be featured in "Nine" will win Best Supporting Actress. I hear Kathy Bates and Mo'Nique (who ever the hell she is) will give these actresses a ru for their money………. We'll see!
Well since everone is giving their predictions, here are mines.

Meryl has too much competition to win. But I can see her getting nominated. The three main contenders for best actress are Hilary Swank for Amelie, Halle Berry for Frankie and Alice, and Audrey Tautou for Coco Avant Chanel.

PONYO BY THE CLIFF OST is for Oscar.
Johnny Depp should win for Public Enemies or Alice in Wonderland 2010. LONG overdue!!! LONG LONG OVERDUE!!!!!
And you know what Daniel Day-Lewis is an awesome Actor, but he has already two of the Golden little Man. sry, but not again. there are other great Actors too. Like Viggo Mortensen as well, for the Road. i hope he gets his 2nd nomination at least. DiCaprio, or Freeman either of them are big faves.
i hope the Academy will not be shitty again in given their Oscars out.
go DEPP!!!
Shutter Island isn't out until Feb 2010, so any nominations for it won't happen till next year.
