The winners at the 15th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards were announced tonight and it is a mixed bag as not one single movie won more than one award and Kate Winslet continued on her path to her first Oscar win.

Winslet took home the Actor for Best Supporting Actress for her role in The Reader, but didn't go home double-fisting as Meryl Streep took home her second SAG award with a win for her great performance in Doubt. Heath Ledger once again won for his role as The Joker in The Dark Knight and his award was accepted by his co-star Gary Oldman who gave a short but sweet speech. The other motion picture acting award went to Sean Penn for Milk as he topped Mickey Rourke who won at the Golden Globes as the plot thickens on the way to the Oscars. Like Rourke at the Globes, Penn gave a pretty good speech and was obviously a little choked up with the win.

The major award for Best Ensemble cast was a bit of a shocker to me since Streep, Adams, Davis and Hoffman were all nominated for Doubt and Penn and Brolin were nominated for Milk. Both films saw an acting winner in Streep and Penn and yet the Actor went to the cast of Slumdog Millionaire. Why am I shocked? Because only Dev Patel was nominated for his acting in Slumdog and he lost to Ledger and yet the other films had more individual nominees as well as winners. Sure, I see Slumdog winning at the Oscars, but logically this one just didn't make sense to me. Oh well, not a big deal, kudos to them and I actually thought the young actors in Slumdog were quite good and have actually been under-appreciated this award season as Patel and Pinto have seen the majority of attention.

With all that said, you can check out the winners and nominees for both film and television below with the winners in bold and if you would like to read my live blog from the show you can do so right here as well as browse the Screen Actors Guild Award winning history right here.

The Slumdog win is a bit ridiculous, but it is the front runner, so it's expected. I still liked the film. Glad to see all the awards evenly spread out.

  2. Leandro Dubost

I think the SAG treated the 'Best Ensemble' award as their own 'Best Movie', you know? Ok, the best ensemble is their most important award at the ceremony, but there's a difference between best ENSEMBLE and best MOVIE. I think the voters went for best movie and completely ignored the fact that, amongst nominees, Slumdog Millionaire had definitely the weakest ensemble. May be the best movie… But had not the best performances, not even individual and not as a ensemble.

Heroes over Friday Night Lights? Really?

  4. Tom

I agree, the ensemble award was a joke. How about the cast of MILK and DOUBT??? But, if they can't even get it together to agree on a contract, how can they be expected to intelligently vote on their own craft?

The ensemble award was a total shocker. Slumdog may be a lot a things, but it was not even close to the other nominess in terms of acting. The organisers just didnt seem to want Slumdog to leave empty handed. It's a real shame when things are so ridiculously obvious. Slumdog has got way too much love, it's getting a bit silly honestly. I hope there are a few shockers come Oscar time; not in Slumdog's favor!

But this isn't the first time the SAG has equated Best Ensemble=Best Movie. Didn't Return of the King win this award in its year too? Inspite of being up against the cast of Mystic River and Seabiscuit?

  7. William

eh, I would agree with The Return of the King, since it had numerous veteran actors, and quality performances by most. Just that there was no real stand out performance, so it didn't get many single acting nominations, while Mystic River, Lost in Translation, etc. did. While those films had better performances from a few actors specifically, I think that Return of the King had a much stronger all around Ensemble. But hey, it's all opinion.

IT should have been Doubt or MILK for best ensemble. Anyway, hope its MILK at the OSCARS.

I am glad that MERYL & SEAN PENN won! Meryl's chances of getting the big O next one is as solid as the metal statue! Too bad, Kate was not nominated for Best Supporting Actress for THE READER at the Oscars, she could have won in that category. There is no way she can beat Meryl at the OSCARS with The Reader.

Anyway, it was really exciting to see the formidable actors win last nite!

I am really starting to dislike slumdog millionaire, i agree that it was a good film but i am sick of it, i dont hate it, i just think its overrated

  10. Jose

Top post #9, everything that recieves tons of awards, fans, raving reviews, and most importantly popularity, is automaticly overrated . I think people should just stop the bitching . We get it, if a film wins dozens of awards, it sucks …

    @Edgardo of West Hollywood:

You are wrong. Kate Winslet is lock to WIn both BAFTA and OSCARS (LEAD) for the Reader. Mark my word. You have no idea at all
