6:56:00 PM: Take a break from the awards for a sec as I give you my favorite scene from Burn After Reading and one from In Bruges:

6:57:30 PM: Quick comment check again and I see we have folks from India, Russia, Playa Del Carmen, New Zealand, D.C. and Sydney… FANTASTIC!!! Glad to see you all and hope I am mildly entertaining… Speak up wherever you are reading from!

7:04:19 PM: Yup, still here, just listening to Steven Spielberg talk about wrecking trains or something…

7:04:59 PM: Still think they should have waited to give Spielberg this award later in life.

7:07:53 PM: He just ended his speech. Kept it pretty short… kudos to him.

7:11:11 PM: In the middle of a commercial break and we will soon be back to award giving…

7:13:02 PM: And here we go… Emma Thompson and Dustin Hoffman are out and she towers over Dustin…

7:14:03 PM: It's the nominees for Best Director… my pick is Boyle for Slumdog

7:14:23 PM: And the winner is… Danny Boyle for Slumdog, will he recognize Loveleen Tandan his unrecognized co-director?

7:15:30 PM: Boom, thanks to Loveleen! That's all I wanted to hear.

7:16:47 PM: And now Sigourney Weaver arrives to introduce Revolutionary Road as a Best Picture (Drama) nominee… Great acting, not necessarily a great movie in my opinion.

7:18:18 PM: Sandra Bullock arrives to present the Best Actor Motion Picture (Musical/Comedy)… my pick was Javier Bardem but I am hearing Dustin Hoffman rumblings…

7:18:57 PM: And the winner is… Colin Farrell for In Bruges!!!!

7:20:06 PM: Now that is a winner I am proud to be wrong on!

7:21:06 PM: Talk about 2008 being the year of Robert Downey all you want… I love seeing the comeback of Colin Farrell

7:23:19 PM: Commercial break time…

7:25:11 PM: Farrell's speech was fun to listen to, probably gonna be one to look for on YouTube in the morning/afternoon/night depending on where you are reading this from. :)

7:26:31 PM: Looks like we have dramatic actors and best pictures left to hand out… here comes Salma Hayek to introduce Vicky Cristina Barcelona as a Best Picture (Comedy/Musical) nominee… my personal #1 film of 2008.

7:33:12 PM: Sacha Baron Cohen out to hand out the award for Best Picture (Musical/Comedy)… he's got jokes: "Madonna has had to get rid of one of her personal assistants… our thoughts go out to Guy Ritchie." They booed him on that one.

7:39:21 PM: Okay… site troubles happened…. Vicky Cristina Barcelona won for Best Comedy and Kate Winslet just won her second Globe of the night for Best Actress (Drama) for Revolutionary Road. Kate's acceptance speech is below:

7:41:54 PM: Okay, and so it seems I may be back to normal… Winslet win is a shocker and won't be the way the Academy goes… But it is awesome to see her win two Globes tonight!

7:43:08 PM: Blake and Rainn are out to award Best Television Series (Drama)…

7:43:57 PM: And the winner is… "Mad Men"

7:46:55 PM: And another commercial break as the site struggles to survive from so much traffic.

7:50:32 PM: Susan Sarandon presenting Best Actor and it goes to Mickey Rourke for The Wrestler

7:51:24 PM: Yet another one I am happy to have been wrong on as I had Sean Penn in Milk. Penn was great, but I think Rourke nailed it.

7:52:55 PM: Rourke is giving another good speech and probably one people will be watching on YouTube.

7:53:48 PM: I think we are left with just Best Drama now… 7 minutes to 8 o'clock here on the West Coast

7:59:25 PM: Tom Cruise is out to present the Best Picture (Drama)

7:59:31 PM: And the winner is… Slumdog Millionaire

8:00:07 PM: Man… I feel like I just survived a tornado!

8:00:31 PM: So, the night is over… Over the next couple of days I will have a Globes vs. Oscars preview comparing how often the Globe winners go on to win an Oscar as well as a new Oscar prediction article…

8:01:50 PM: So… thanks for joining me and putting up with a couple of server glitches.

I predict Slumdog will sweep. If any of you haven't seen it find your nearest indie theatre and GO!

Thanks for the coverage. I can't watch it live so I might as well read it live.

  14. Lily

@Jack: so jealous!! I'm freezing my apartment under 2 feet of snow!

  15. Helen

I'm checking in from DC (although I'm a Brit) and am enjoying the up to the minute coverage and commentary and I'll be staying through to the end. Are you planning to do something similar for the Oscars?

  16. Yvette

Glad Gabriel Byrne won. He is so very talented. If you ever have an opportunity to see him in theatre live do so. Keep the results coming. You are far more entertaining than the shows….all are a star studded snore fest. By the way did anyone else notice Tom Hanks wife's dress. She was pushed up in that dress. Goodness! Hey you should cover the inaugural events for us.

  17. Nat

I'm just happy Winslet won as well as Heath – well deserved!

Can't wait for Best Actor/ress catergory + picture!

I wish I could see the awards online somewhere….*sigh*

    ….I'm from Sydney Australia here!

  18. PiLiaM

David Duchovny and Californication the best!

  19. Laverne

    Yvette…

I had to take a double look at Rita Wilson and her boobs…I mean dress. I was like OMGosh!!!

  20. Yvette

Laverne me too. Another middle-aged star who is still showing her girls long after they have become old ladies. lol

  21. Love that Globe for Tina Fey!

  22. Meghana

YAY!! A R Rahman won! im from India , so this is a 'YAY' moment for me :-)

    Meghana

  23. nick82

    Another Aussie here (in Brisbane)…

Congrats on 30 Rock – awesome series!

  24. Eddie

I'm writing from France! I must say, Tina Fey always has the funniest acceptance speeches. Her comment about the Hollywood Foreign Press really made me laugh.

  25. Sean

Hey guys, watching in Ireland here, rooting for our man Col for the globe! Brendan Gleeson worthy too but Farrells performance was a career best and he deserves this, come on Col!

  26. Premila Puri

Woo hoo…Am thrilled about Slumdog's 2 wins….Indian from London….hope your other predictions were for Slumdog scooping best pic and best director…so cool to get live blog…Premila

  27. Lars

    Sweden. nice job

  28. Nat

    Yay on Tina Fey's win!

Can't wait to see her speech. :)

…does anyone know when the best picture is announced?

  29. Fleur

Tuning in from New Zealand, missing out on watching these from home – so this is what I do at work!

  30. Dylan

Reading and constantly refreshing from Huntsville, Alabama!

Watching, I'm still astonished at the lack of recognition for Milk.

  31. @Nat: Best Drama Picture is the last one to be announced, so I'm afraid you'll have to wait quite a long time

  32. Yvette

Fleur in California they have the one hour Golden Globe Red Carpet Special….the show still isn't one yet. Thanks to Brad I won't have to watch it. His blog is far more interesting, succinct and entertaining

  33. br0

Is there a reason why P. Diddy is at the Golden Globes?

  34. Dylan

Oh! Also, I'm accessing this site via my cell phone, so the videos are unavailable to me. I'm just curious about which scene from Burn After Reading you chose as your favorite. My favorite was when Brad and Frances are talking to Osbourne Cox on the phone.

  35. Diane

    thanks, from bethlehem,pa

  36. Jim in SF

Enjoying reading from San Francisco. Now I won't have to watch it.

  37. Nat

    Wurtzel: thanks for that! :D

  38. Katie

Great blog!! Checking in from Auckland, New Zealand. Was surprised to see Anna won for True Blood, I really hoped Mariska would win.

  39. Risa

I think they could've waited 10 more years with Spielberg once he had managed to direct at least ONE more classic and 3/4 commercially successful garbage. Someone like Sidney Lumet seemed more fitting to me.

  40. Premila Puri

YAY YAY YAY….way to go Slumdog!!! Its 03:18am and I can't sleep! Premila

  41. Meghana

SLUMDOG!!!!!! i am sooooooo thrilled, can you tell?!! hahaha…yay!

  42. Steve

I love the Colin Farrell pick. Maybe it might be Best Comedy and maybe some Academy love? No doubt it.

  43. Lily

@Diane: wait your in bethlehem, pa as well?? Lehigh?

  44. Risa

Congrats to Danny Boyle! Fingers crossed for the Oscars! Actually I'm hoping Slumdog will take the Best Picture Oscar at the very least in case Fincher takes the Best Director.

  45. Kate

2009 is def the year of Tina Fey! Brilliant! Thanks for the recap.
    Kate from Denmark

  46. I'm soooooooooooooo happy for Kate Winslet! She's just amazing, and it's time for the Academy to acknowledge her great talent as an actress. Congrats Kate!

  47. Laverne

    Glad you are back!!!

  48. Andelle

    Yaaaaay Farrell and Winslet!
    YAAAAAAAY!

  49. Another reader from New Zealand – enjoying your commentary though I originally only found it because I missed the first five minutes!

  50. Nat

For a second there I thought my comp was screwing up!

    CONGRATULATIONS KATEEEE!
I'M SOOOO HAPPY FOR HER! That was very unexpected….I thought Meryl would get it?? Still, she truly does deserve it. I bet she's eccstatic. From what I've heard she's crying again. :( Poor darling. Too many awards in one night – she's not used to the attention lol…

    Go Kate!

  51. Helen

Much though I loved Sean Penn in Milk, Mickey Rourke truely deserved to win – interesting to see who comes out on top on 22 Feb

  52. Laverne

Thank you so much for doing this! I will sleep easy tonight. (:

  53. Helen

Brad – you are a star! Thanks for a great blog, loved the commentary and glad that the site held up at the end. Cheers

  54. Yvette

thank you so much!!!!!! They need you at the show!

  55. Quake82

Thanks Ropeofsilicon for all the great blogging. Even though I got to watch the live broadcast, your blog, Brad, was a nice addition! I was very happy about the results – except for Best Picture (Drama). I mean, Slumdog Millionaire was brilliant – but there is no way it was better than Revolutionary Road (my pick for best Picture). Also, why the hell wasn't Gran Torino nominated for Best Picture? or Eastwood for Actor? Makes no sense.

Great broadcast – kudos to Mickey Rourke for his phenomenal comeback (the greatest of the decade). Also, could someone please let Ricky Gervais host the Oscars, Globes, Emmy's or some award show? His comments were actually funny. Instead, the Academy chose…..Hugh Jackman? The guy is eye-candy…not host-material.

  56. Pita Prosperi de Luca

Was very pleased to see real glamour return to Hollywood! So beautiful, graceful, classy were Kate Winslet, Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz, Eva Mendez, Demi Moore… BRAVO ladies. JLo and Bionce however, should forgo the tight fitting, revealing, flashy dresses. They don't have the figure for it and the public and fashion critiques should be honest about it.

  57. Thaduwlms

Hello , i greatly love reading this blog so much!
This is another one of my favorite postings.

I figured to ask you though and couldn't find another way to contact you, but I would love to see you do
a post on the US economic recession. I know this may be out of the ordinary for your blog, but I really
like how you think and would love to see your thoughts on this topic.

    Thanks!
