Okay, Little Miss Sunshine took home the Best Ensemble Cast in a Motion Picture at tonight's Screen Actors Guild Awards. What does this mean? It means there may now be a favorite for Best Picture.

Now there are some past Ensemble Cast winners that have won the Oscar for Best Picture (Shakespeare In Love, Crash, Chicago, Return of The King, American Beauty), while others haven't (Traffic, Sideways, Gosford Park, Apollo 13). But I would argue that the movies that didn't win never had a real shot to win the Oscar.

Traffic came out when it was really Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon versus Gladiator. Sideways came out the same year when it was Million Dollar Baby versus The Aviator. Gosford Park came out the year A Beautiful Mind had it in the bag. And nothing was beating Braveheart back in '95 as far as the Academy was concerned.

I think when the Academy moved up the nominations and awards, it didn't make the Globes and SAGs less relevant (as it was intended), it made them more relevant. When the nominations were announced, the Oscar race that seemed to be cooking was The Departed against Little Miss Sunshine. And with everyone head-over-heels for Little Miss Sunshine – and now the SAGs throwing some serious love – I don't know how you don't give the little girl the edge right now.

You heard it here, folks. It's as close to official as you can get without being, in fact, official. Little Miss Sunshine is your 2007 Oscar Winner for Best Picture.

Everything else went as scripted with Murphy, Hudson, Whitaker and Mirren all winning. Have you ever seen a year with less suspense? One thing I hate in an awards show is predictability. Looks like we're in for a long night February 25th.

I am sure you have an opinion on this, be sure to either post a comment below or vote for your favorite in the RopeofSilicon Poll on the homepage right now!

Little Miss Sunshine Best Ensemble is the right choice!!!!

  2. Hey yony, but what do you think…? Best Picture? The Academy went with CRASH last year and now I am starting to think they might just go with LMS. It did make a huge Oscar push with that slogan… Little Miss Best Picture.

I think that LMS has good chance to win Best Picture!

It is number two in my Best movie of 2006 list
