Looks like a year for only three animated nominees

Well, it looks like any hope for five animated films being nominated for the Animated Feature Film Oscar at the 83rd Academy Awards is out of the question as the Academy released the list of films submitted for consideration this year.

Before having a look, remember under the rules for this category, in any year in which 8 to 15 animated features are released a maximum of three may be nominated. If 16 or more animated features are submitted and accepted in the category, a maximum of five may be nominated.

The question now is what three will be nominated?

  1. Alpha and Omega
  2. Cats and Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore
  3. Despicable Me
  4. The Dreams of Jinsha
  5. How to Train Your Dragon
  6. Idiots and Angels
  7. The Illusionist
  8. Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole
  9. Megamind
  10. My Dog Tulip
  11. Shrek Forever After
  12. Summer Wars
  13. Tangled
  14. Tinker Bell and the Great Fairy Rescue
  15. Toy Story 3

Having seen all but Summer Wars, Tinker Bell and the Great Fairy Rescue, Idiots and Angels and The Dreams of Jinsha I have a list of my top four predictions from a little over a week ago.

My four look like this:

  1. Toy Story 3
  2. How to Train Your Dragon
  3. The Illusionist
  4. Tangled

The problem I have here is one of these films will get snubbed and I have a feeling it will be Disney's Tangled in an effort to maintain some semblance of diversity among the three nominees. The Illusionist adds a more art house feel to the selection while Toy Story 3 and How to Train Your Dragon have built up a wealth of good will over the year that Tangled will have a hard time penetrating once it's released later this month, despite the fact it is amazing.

I've just updated my predictions for this category based on this new information. You can click here to check those out.

Based on what you've seen and what you feel, which three films do you predict will be nominated?

Toy Story 3 will win this without a doubt. I adored How To Train Your Dragon though.

  2. Greg

Toy Story 3 for the win! Although I loved How to Train Your Dragon, Megamind and Legend of the Guardians as well.

  3. Stiggy

I guess Jackboots on Whitehall isn't eligible this year.

  4. Feedback

Tangled, Toy Story and How to Train your Dragon.

The Illusionist just wasn't that good.

I hadn't heard of Idiots and Angels, My Dog Tulip, and Summer Wars. Those all look pretty awesome, especially the first one.

Also, why is Cats and Dogs considered animated, did Tinker Bell receive a limited theatrical release, and why the hell is Alpha and Omega even on the long-list?

Totally agree – Alpha and Omega was appauling. Shame that Ghibli's take on The Borrowers didn't qualify / failed to make the cut.

If Cats and Dogs is in there, then Avatar should have been last year instead of Best Picture.

  8. Toy Story 3
    How To Train Your Dragon
    Despicable Me

Loved all 3 but Toy Story 3 is simply just a masterpiece, no doubt it will win. Hopefully, Despicable Me will be the one to fill that 3rd slot, it deserves to get nominated.

Toy Story 3 will win, without a doubt.

    Pixar always wins.

  10. Will

TS3 wins. I can't picture it walking out of the Kodak Theater empty handed. This is the one and only chance AMPAS will have to reward the series that ushered the CG animated film revolution. It will be nominated for BP but won't win it, so the Animated feature will suffice. HTTYD was solid and I've been hearing great things about Tangled, but those two just has the misfortune of being released in the same year as TS3, and that Pixar did not drop the ball on that one.

Having to compete with the brilliance of TS3 is hard enough, but they aren't just competing agains it; they are actually competing against its predecessors as well, similar to the films of 2003 that had to contend with Return of the King for the prize.

  11. Tangled will definitely on the final three. Either The Illusionist or How to Train Your Dragon that will going out of the way.

PS: Think it won't be a good news for DreamWorks.

  12. JM

    Toy Story 3
    How to Train Your Dragon
    Despicable Me

And I think HTTYD will be the winner. Pixar has won three years in a row now. I thought they might break up the pattern with "Fantastic Mr. Fox" last year, but the film didn't get nearly enough attention for that. But it's not that I mind Pixar winning repeatedly, because it deserves it.

  13. Chauncey

TS3 wins it. It'll get a Best Pic nomination and a screenplay nomination which basically cinches the Animated Oscar. Normally I'd agree with the notion that "They've won it several years in a row and its time someone else wins. but if there is Pixar fatigue among Academy voters, I think we would've seen it by now. Also, I recall reading at I think some entertainment blog at the LA times last summer, that Academy screenings of Toy Story 3 to voters were rapturous in their praise and applause of the film.

  14. I'm disappointed that "Sita Sings the Blues" didn't get recognized, despite great reviews and an Oscar-qualifying run back in April.

  15. destiny

I'm excited to see Tangled! And I hope it gets nominated… but my guts telling me that Toy Story will win. Best way to end an amazing trilogy.
